w00t! I got my stim today, and my MS showed up but I wasn't here to sign for it so I have to go pick it up at the post office in the morning.

Image

our cat Bimmer was a little too interested, I had to lock the stim up after these pics because he kept trying to attack the jumpers.
Image

I'll update the first post with all the new equipment when I get my MS tomorrow, and I'll start building the writeup for testing the MS3 with the stim.

ok, well my wife picked up my MS today at the post office and I'm not thrilled with the packing job the seller used.

first thing I heard when I pulled the MS box out was rattling from inside the case. :x I pulled the case open and this fell out.
Image

Looks like one of the screws that hold the board to the case, but I'm not sure where.

I really need to test this thing with my stim, but I can't find any instructions on setting up the stim to the MS on the DIY website, anyone know where I can find this info?

The stim should just plug in. But if the MS3 has a connector for the stock harness, you're SOL. Gotta pin it out yourself then.

nah it has the MS harness plug, I see what your talking about. I'm installing a fresh copy of Win7 on my tuning laptop right now, then I'll install the tuning download package from DIY and make sure the box is working.

maybe a stupid question, but to bench test the MS does the stim power the MS or do I need another 12v supply to power the MS?

man, I am having no luck getting Tunerstudio to read the MS3 box. I'm using the USB plug and it just reads "No device found, check your connections". The MS box doesn't have any LEDs so I don't even know if the unit is powering up.

edit: may be a driver problem, Yoshi do you know if the chip set for MS3 is VCP or D2XX?

edit: ok, got it to read the MS3, but now it's telling me "The correct configuration file for: MS3 Format 0089.001 was not found locally Would you like to look for it at EFIAnalytics.com?" When I click 'yes' it comes up "server unavailable".

For preliminary stuff, i wouldn't use tuner studio. I'd use megatune. Port checker is awesome and you know it'll work with MS3. Does tuner studio support MS3?

yeah, I got it working on COM4. I didn't have the .ini file for the MS3 downloaded. I'm getting response from Manifold Air Temp, Coolant Temp, and AFR. Not getting anything from the RPM (or RPM fine) knob, or TPS. I'm just starting to read through the Tuning Your MS2 (or Microsquirt) Controller section of the Megamanual (says it's for MS3 also.). I assume it will cover calibration also because I'm not getting full range on the gauges from the stim. I also haven't seen where to set up the toothed wheel, so maybe that is when I will get readings for the Ignition Advance gauge?

I don't think Megatune supports MS3, I tried opening it but there is no MS3 in the list. Tunerstudio is what DIY tells you to use.

You won't get an RPM without tweaking a few things. You need to tell tuner studio and MT that you're running spark control and not just fuel. MT 100% does MS3, you just need to download the firmware for it. Regardless, you should download and burn fresh firmware to the MS and load the INI stuff to your computer.

so you use MT and TS to tune? Where do I download the MT firmware for MS3? Where do I download the fresh firmware for the MS, and how do I burn it, lol? Starting to feel pretty overwhelmed here.

I always use MT. Haven't tried much with the others. As for firmware and stuff, should be on the site. *shrugs* it has instructions. Fairly straight forward.

The only instructions pertaining to MS3 covers TS, no mention of MT at all. Where on DIY did you find directions for MT and MS3?

edit: don't see anything for MS3 here: http://www.megamanual.com/files/software/

I'm getting a little frustrated here. It seems there is lots of conflicting info on the DIY website, and very little direct info on MS3. They tell you in one section to use TS with MS3, then point you to the tuning tutorial that has no mention of MS3 and is written to be used with MT. The DIYautotune software download includes MT, but it doesn't include the version that has MS3x. I'm really at a stand still here, no idea where to go next...Kinda seems like they offered a product before having any support available.

You can't use MegaTune with MS3. TunerStudio is so much nicer anyway...

quoted from a thread I started on Megasquirt MSEXTRA and MS3EFI support forum. The confusion just keeps getting worse...
