F$%n turbo oil feed

Postby Yoshi » Tue Dec 28, 2010 2:35 pm

I put faith in fast-turbo.com that their oil kit would work without needing modification. As you might know, I've had issues with engine bay fires from oil spewing out of the turbo exhaust housing and onto the manifold. I thought it was a PCV system problem and still haven't tested my solution.

I decided to ask the only other source I can about turbo stuff - BFC. They kept hounding me about the turbo oil feed. I decided to take out the oil "restrictor" and measure it. 0.9375" >_< A large size would be about 0.060".

Anyone know where I can get a 1/8" npt to -3AN adapter/restrictor combo? I'm probably going to have my bud weld it up and redrill a hole but I'd much rather have a brand new part. Wish I could weld aluminum :(

so your oil feed is too big, and that is causing a problem?

some forums say you need a restrictor, some say you don't. i've seen no blow up stories from those running a restrictor so I guess i'll do that.

I guess I don't understand, the large oil feed is allowing too much oil pressure? Can't you just run a pressure regulator pre-feed?

it's variable. the turbo needs different pressure under different circumstances. Standard practice is to use a specific diameter hole to regulate over all pressure throughout the rpm band of the turbo.

well, in this situation I would look to the OE application. These turbos (Holset) are primarily used on big diesel engines running up to 30psi stock, so the stock setup would need to account for the same oil flow your using. What kind of feed setup does the Cummins use?

i found this reply interesting.

Everyone has been worrying about a restrictor for the oil feed, but the real problem could be caused by this! Too small a drain hole would dramatically increase oil pressure inside the turbo, no matter what size the oil feed restrictor is...

He has a point.

Yea already read that. My return is a full -10 straight down. The problem is that my return isn't super straight. It's as straight as itll get though.

-10 is 5/8.

Since the restrictor was 0.9375" and the drain is only 0.625" it can defiantly cause oil pressure build up inside the turbo. The oil cant flow quick enough.

well that makes a big difference, makes a lot more sense now. Feed is still a lot bigger than the drain, I would focus on improving the drain not restricting the feed.
