Help me pick a new turbo.....

Postby ss45466 » Sat Sep 10, 2011 1:12 am

I'm having a hard time deciding on which way i want to go. And I might have to save for a while longer...
But about 1 week ago my turbo decided to give up the ghost within about 2 driving cycles (bearings went, massive shaft play and lots of oil smoke out the exhaust) The engine still runs strong and no oil on the spark plugs. Its parked now untill I get a new turbo.

I was running a turbonetics gtk-350 ball bearing .63 a/r turbine with a stg. 3 turbine wheel. This turbo was kinda small for my overall goals but was reccomended by turbonetics themselves for my power goals @ the time.

I'm looking @ 2 t3/t4 turbos, the new garrett dual ball bearing gtx3582r with a .63 a/r turbine housing or the precision journal bearing sc6262sp with the .63 a/r turbine housing (also avaliable with a single ball bearing for a little more). They both can handle the power I'm looking to go for shortly and both can be upgraded to the .82 a/r exhaust housing by just buying the housing itself.

What say e30performance?

I have enough saved for the precision but the garrett is twice the price... :|

Enjoying a beer pondering between them. :D

I actually saw one of those Garret gtx3582r turbos a while ago and it was really nice, top quality built. That said, you would probably be just as happy with the Precision and have a butt load of money to put into other improvements.

That's what I was thinking. I need to save a little more to get the ball bearing version.

Garrett gtx3582r:
Compressor specs:
inducer 62.5mm
exducer: 84.5mm
.70 a/r
Turbine specs:
wheel dia: 68mm
trim: 84
Turbine a/r .63 .82 1.06
Ball bearing
oil and water cooled
price: ~$2200 shipped with turbine housing, avaliable cheaper without

Precision 6262:
Compressor specs:
Inducer: 62mm
Exducer: 84mm
.70 a/r
Turbine specs:
wheel dia: 62mm
trim: ???
Turbine a/r: .63 .82
journal or ball bearing
oil cooled only
Price: $900 journal bearing, $1500 ball bearing , both includes the turbine housing

Hoping to order one in a few weeks, I miss my car :(

If you're willing to spend $2200 on a GTX, you can spend less on a Borg Warner EFR and have a better built turbo that will spool faster due to less reciprocating mass. The only problem is that BW can't keep up with the demand for 'em. Peruse Yoshi's build thread for more info and a link to BW's own turbo sizing calculator.

I don't like how difficult/impossible it is to find any maps for Precision's turbos.
