best turbo for m50tu

Postby 610EURO » Sat May 30, 2009 4:52 am

like the title says, i have a vanos m50. whats the best holset for this ? im looking to run 8-10 psi. the motor is all stock. i dont plan on raising the boost higher then that now but a turbo that would allow for higher boost later on would be ideal. so what do you guys reccomend ? hx40 ? hx50 ? hx35 ? h1C ? some bastard child i dont know about ?

I would say HX40, but look at the compressor maps and see which one fits your goals.

it's almost exactly how i would love mine to be with the rims, the m50, the low sheen paint... except i have an unhealthy obsession with diving boards

HX35 will do you best. It's T3 flanged and from my research, will be best bang for your buck. T4s and HX40s will spool too late and laggy for your low boost application. H1Cs are also another option since they are also T3 flanged but tend to spool a bit later than HX35s (but sooner than HX40s IMO... or about the same).

IMO HX35 all the way. But I have one so I'm biased.

sounds good. can i remove the internal wastegate and put on an external one or should i try and find a non-wastegated hx35 turbo ? if they exist. is there any difference between the hx35 years ? is there a specific one ui should be looking for ?

Exhaust housings are interchangeable. Some ppl even do HX35/40 hybrids like T3/T4s. You should be able to either weld the WG shut on the housing or pick up another housing.

Although, there are different sized housings and you should be aware of what each does. EG Garretts haev A/R but Holset has CM^2. www.turbobyholset.com is a good place to ask those things. I don't know much about them myself.

I think its HX40 compressor side on an HX35 turbo. They should bolt right up. I'm fairly sure the HX40 exhaust housing will bolt onto an HX35 but that would make it T4 flanged and spool like SHIT.
