turbos are turbos. they seem to work about the same no matter what brand. Size is what you are looking for more than brand. Copying my setup can be done with a diff turbo no prob.

Justin, from what i gather you scooped up that manifold over at e30tech. Smart buy IMO. You should be able to fit a decent turbo on that.

Yea, the turbo was externally gated and a small t3. Ideally I want something internally gated due to the ease of installation, but I can plumb in a flange for an external wastegate. I think that the ideal turbo is going to be an internally gated HX35 with a 14cm housing. I don't know what trim yet, still trying to learn.

Yea, I got that manifold off the tech. What do you guys think?

Internal wastegates are shit. You can't control boost well with them. You need external.

Internal wastegates on HX35s are around 35psi lol.

Do you have any pics of you turbo before you mounted it? Did you weld your wastegate shut yourself (I know you strugle with welding  )?

haha I went from internal gated to external since my sponsor had a non wg housing lying around.

I'll see about posting up pix. It's somewhere in my build thread on tech if you can find it. I wish I had gone non WG housing. I didn't think the difference would be so much. I wouldn't have had to bash in my wheel wells or at least that much.

So say if I go external wastegate, I want to run low boost. If I run the HX35 I know that I will need a moderate wastegate to run low boost. Is a 38mm going to be efficient or should I got 44-50?

I'm running a 38mm WG and I get a little bit of boost creep. If you want to stay 8psi, 45mm is your best bet. Altho a bit of creep to 9psi really isn't that bad.

What ever I do I just want to do it correct the first time so that if/when I sell it there is no issues. So pretty much anything over 38mm should be all set? I'm prolly going to be using ebay for most of my turbo stuff.

If you get an ebay WG, make sure you have something in case it fails. My MS has boost cut if I get over 12psi. Don't want to blow the motor cuz your ebay diaphragm died.

Oil drain was tig welded on with a baffle by a bud of mine. If's baffled so the oil level is flat and doesn't cause a pile up of oil. It's not necessary but a good precaution.

How would that pile up with oil at that angle?

if the oil return is below the level of the oil, It'll back up. IE the flow of oil back into the pan won't level out fast enough and will back up into the turbo.

I just did the same kinda thing I put a little plate with holes in it around where the oil drains into the pan. I just did a install on a 08 avenger and the oil pans on those have baffles all through the oil pan kinda cool. but if the oil level was low it would be scary.

I bought one of the ebay manifolds and welded a 1 inch section of pipe with a wastegate flange on it and its worked awesome for a year now.

I am actually running a .48 housing now and I love it boost comes on almost instant and holds 18 psi all the way to redline. when I had the .63 boost wouldnt get to 10 psi till 2nd gear around 4000 rpm. Im so in love with the .48 now its awesome.
