FAN CLUTCH STUCK BAAAD - suggetions?

Postby vvurdsmyth » Sun Jun 15, 2014 10:22 pm

Doing the timing belt; when I replaced the water pump 3 years ago the 32mm wrench on the nut behind the fan clutch.. long screwdriver on a fin of the fan clutch and a gentle wack with a rubber mallet and the fan clutch spun right off... not so this time; sprayed some PB Blaster behind the fan clutch and been wacking the screwdriver with increasing ferocity, even breaking some of the fins; of course the direction is clockwise & with the 32mm on the nut; should have use some anti-seize on the threads when I did the water pump, but never thought the seize could be this sticky...; before I destroy the fan clutch to get it off, any suggestions..?

Thank you Yoshi, the fan clutch is off; I had figured it out... used a thin tool steel bar to snag a bolt head and shaft to hold it steady while I turned the nut with the 32mm spanner; somehow when I did the water pump, 3-4 years ago, it came off so easy, it skewed my recollection of how I did it.. like a non-event.. but now it is off.

Turner Motorsports (as well as many other's I'm sure) sells a tool to hold the water pump pulley while you remove the fan clutch. I know you ended up getting it, but maybe take a look at their tool. Shouldn't be too hard to make a tool like that yourself.

Or do like me and ditch the mechanical fan and never deal with it again, lol.

87e30 & M20_fever, Thanks again guys.. Yah I read posts about the pulley tool, but somehow it didn't register.. it kiinda didn't jive with what I thought was my experience with the pulley several years ago; must have done it with the belt still in place and a tap with a screwdriver & mallet spun the fan clutch off.. something like that; but a pulley tool isn't necessary, just a length of 1/4" tool steel snagging a bolt head to hold it steady and even that thick 32mm spanner did it..; now to work on the crank shaft pulley...

I always leave the belt on and tension it so it doesn't spin. Fuck special tools!
