MAF or AFM

Postby dahabit » Mon Jan 05, 2015 4:37 am

Gang,

I'm back for more knowledge.
So I'm planning on installing a cold air intake on my 87 325is. After hours of research on the interweb I have learned that I need to install a MAF (mass air flow). Does anyone have any experience with this? Can someone suggest a good MAF?

thanks

I'm sorry what? Cold air intakes don't require MAFs unless it's from like miller or something. In which case, you have to use their MAF. Even then, the stock snorkel actually beats EVERY after market cold air intake.

Long story short, you're wasting your money.

wait, are you talking about putting a cone filter on the stock AFM, or actually switching to an MAF from the AFM? If you just want to put a cone filter on the AFM, yes ebay sells the adapter, if you want to switch to MAF your going to need something like a Miller setup, which is not worth the time/money IMO.

yeah, hit up ebay. Yoshi is right though, stock airbox outflows the cone filters.

For anyone wondering, I was planning on buying this one.
I don't think it produces any extra power just kind of doing it for the looks. Don't judge me.

It's just some dude that thinks he's cool. He just makes stuff with very little thought and faux research and sells it. He has no clue what he's doing. NO CLUE.

Never heard anything bad about Kamron's stuff, I was going to get his extra wide fender flares at some point.

He seems like a nice enough guy, but I've never thought any of his products really their cost. His products largely stem from the general e30/turbo knowledge base, so he doesn't have anything revolutionary going on, but he has a clean/fast car so, he can 'profit' from it in the form of accolades and attention.

In the end, he goes through setups (intake, flares, turbo kit) that work for him and then he sells them to offset his cost. There's nothing wrong with it, but sort of like Yoshi said, I've never seen any sort of real R&D from him.

If you just want it for the looks, go for it. If you want to make power with an intake while keeping the AFM (the main restriction in the intake path), get ready for engineering school.

developing the components for his own car first IS R&D. His flares are probably the nicest looking on the market, no idea on quality. The intake, yeah just for looks, but it is a nice looking part. Honestly I've basically built most my car with parts that stem from forum users developing parts on their own cars and selling them. Our own member Matt does the same thing and his are some of the best parts on my car. I wouldn't knock these guys for being smarter than us and actually MAKING money off their e30s and instead of sending them to the poor house like us.

Flares I don't care about. it's body panels. But you're right, it's based off HIS R&D. So that NA intake is conjecture at best. All his turbo bits are based off his and only his car. Same with the flares. What if his frame was tweaked and the flares are off a bit? He'd never know.

Don't need to keep this thread going honestly. I personally don't like his products. Others disagree.
