4.6 mustang swap... has it been done

Postby crazgrk » Wed Jan 14, 2015 5:28 am

Here's one for ya. A friend of mine gave me a 99 mustang gt with the 4.6. I read somewhere that this engine will not fitnbecause it it 32" wide and there isn't enough room in my engine bay for i . However I measured it at its widest point. And it it 26.25" wide. The reason I want to do this swap is because it was a free engine and transmission. And because I have a super charger sitting on the shelf for this engine! This will sound awesome and make good power. However I really don't want to go through the trouble of pulling both engines and dropping the 4.6 in and then finding out something hits and won't wor . Has anyone done the 4.6 swap? I've seen plenty of5.0 swaps. And other v8s but never the 4.6

I haven't seen this one myself, but anything's possible with a little imagination and the right tools. Not a fan of Ford or the 4.6, but I'd love to see how it turns out.

I would imagine if a 5.0 could fit a smaller engine should also fit. Hell, you can shove a 5.7 Chevy in there. I have 2 of those, they are pretty big engines. Obviously you'd have to fab up some mounts and other bits.

The 5.7 gm motor has a cam underneath. The heads are smaller making the engine narrower. The 4.6 is a sohc. Which means the heads are taller and because its a 90degree v8 its actually physically larger then the 5.7 and even the 6.0 ls

I looked into this a little while ago. From pictures (I haven't seen one in person), the LS looks like a really tight fit in some spots. I know some people have swapped in the old ford 302 "5.0", but it seems to be even smaller than the LS. The SOHC and DOHC 4.6L are noticeably wider because of the larger heads.

I would be surprised if you find the engine will not physically fit in the engine bay. That said, there are a lot of other considerations to make trying to fit a V where a \ used to sit. That said, people make the BMW V8s (DOHC), V12s, and V10 fit. (I'm not saying all these things can't be managed, but they're things that come to mind)

Transmission options? How large is the transmission, particularly the bellhousing? How will the transmission affect the mounting position of the motor?

Exhaust routing? (Apparently a PITA with V8 swaps)

Engine height? How tall will the engine have to sit in the engine bay? What will oil-pan clearance be like?

Accessories? (Do you want AC? Power steering?)

That looks like a M62 intake manifold, aka a 4.6L from a X5. A modular isn't going to fit without a lot of... massaging.
