Yoshi's Brake Caliper rebuild

Postby Yoshi » Thu Jan 20, 2011 10:10 pm

Let me know how I did. I reformatted my computer so I had to use the new windows movie maker. Which is... ok. I also rushed to put together the video. I need to get better at taking video.

Looks good! I'm not getting any sound, may be my computer though. I had to send my good machine for some warranty work so I'm on my backup machine which is pretty old.

fairly good video. But i recommend not using anti-seize.

Dip the square cut seal in brake fluid, install it, then dip the piston and install it. The brake fluid lubs everything up.

Do not sand or score the piston. If you sand it, it will rust over time when water gets into the brake fluid. Any score marks or roughness will wreck the square cut seal and it will just piss out fluid. The caliper body isn't that important.

To clean it out caliper, either use brake cleaner ad go to town or get a gallon of gas a metal tub and put the caliper bodies in them. Leave them over night. The gas will degrease and get all the crap out. Then use compressed air to dry them out.

Also when using anti-seize on the slider pins make sure you put the cap on. If you don't dirty/sand and other crap will get caught in the anti-seize and end up seizing. Ask me how i know ;)

So, I feel like a jackass newb. How the hell do you get the pistons out without wrecking them? I've managed to contain the damage to just the outer end that contacts the brake pad but I feel like I'm missing a trick here.

put a piece of wood in the caliper and use shop air to blow the piston out. WEAR EYE PROTECTION, brake fluid will spray out.

That's what I was afraid of.

Yoshi, I'm reporting you to the FCC your for false advertising in your video. -yuush-

Meh, I'll figure it out. I don't have a compressor but I know some people who do.
