MVRK - DIY: M50 Swap Straight Shifter

Those of us that choose to use the G260 tranny with our M/S5X swaps are faced with an issue. Due to the rotation of the engine the shifter tends to lean about 12* towards the passenger if you use all the stock G260 carrier stuff. There have been quite a few writeups where people make one off type fixes that sort of work. There was a guy who custom made a few for sale as well. This is my DIY. My shifter sits dead upright, the total cost on this is about ~$10 for materials or free if you have it lieing around. I am using the Z4 3.0L shifter with all new bushings, and my shifter is very tight, and somewhat notchy. I love it because you can feel the gates very easily and never miss shifts.

To the DIY:

1. Cut the stock carrier - you can do this just about at any length:

2. Get some 3/8" sheet steel and cut it down 3" long x 2" wide:

3. Now we need to drill bolt holes. 2 bolts per half. If you are doing it by hand drill out the middle of the I part first. Or you can just use a drill press:

4. At this point you need to bend the sheet steel in the middle. I used a vice and a rubber hammer, but get creative. Also I used one bolt in each half and kept test fitting it until the shifter was where i wanted it. I like it straight up and down, but you can go as far as making it point toward you if you like. I went about 6*

5.Because I like everything to be sold I also added little angle iron to keep everything in place. As well as lock washers and lock tite.

I just solid mounted my shifter to the chassis lol. This works too!

I totally forgot about this part of the swap and only really realzied it when I got there. This was my off the wall solution. As far as mounting to the chasis, do you have to build some sort of plate with a bearing in it? or just buy the AKG swap type thing?

I just use a vise and an adjustable wrench and tweak it a little bit, but this works too.

Well if it works as well as your harness converters I would stay the fuck away from this.

Lil harsh there buddy^^^ but I did hear a little about it. :|

Doing a 24v swap at the shop now, we're using the zf 320 trans as well, do you know where I would find a shorter shift linkage and shift rod, the stock ones look about 2-2 1/2 inches too long, eyeballing it. It's one thing I haven't looked into yet, will be internet searching over the weekend. Might just cut it and get it welded back together. Thanks for any help!

If you were on a schedule and bought a harness adapater that was supposed to work, and then spent 2 weeks without a car diagnosing problems with the adapter you would be a bit harsh too.


as far as I know the G240 (318 tranny) is shorter then the g260 carrier.

ya I am actually replacing my harness this weekend with my own build. At the time I needed a plug and play cause i was on the clock. And he wasnt there to back up his product. I didnt make a public show out of it, and I dont want to do that now. Rough patch or not, you shouldnt sell a product you cant back.

BTW maybe you misunderstood, or maybe I misunderstood. the 260 carrier is about an inch and half to 2 inches longer then the 240 one. Not sure if you need long or short.

True-true I got the adapter pinout from here: http://www.rmeuropean.com/bmw-e30-m50-swap.aspx

I need one shorter, I went from the 318 m42 w/g240 trans (still have the shift linkage from that trans in the car). Installed the m52 w/ zf320 trans and the linkage is 2"-2.5" too long.

I was going to get the g260 linkage to try, it should be shorter? The g240 trans is shorter compared to the g260 (I think it is)?

G240's i believe is longer then the g260 linkage. The tranny is further away from the shifter hole.
