Brake issues in general...

Postby AustinR » Tue Jan 24, 2012 4:21 am

Yo guys. I'm working on changing my parking brake cables right now and I hit a bit of a snag.
Right where the housing meets it's mount by the trailing arm, it is broken off.
Image

Then it's also broken off right where it enters the hub assembly/brake housing/whatever.
Image

How is the cable housing supposed to connect in these two places? I'm sure it's gonna be a biatch trying to get the remaining pieces of casing out of where they are, but I'm not even sure what a baseline looks like.

I couldn't find a write-up on this project. Is there one? I searched for a bit to no avail.

Also, these little bastards (both sides) are seized right up. Is it worth trying to get them free or should I get new ones?
Image

Thanks!

It is going to be a tough job.
Take the car to a mechanic to remove the cable sleeve at the wheel end.
Then bring the car home for the easier stuff.
I did the same job on an E36 but I had the rear suspension apart for replacement of bushings.
Access was tough then, but it will be harder in your case.

The body end should be easier if you can get a drill in there. drill thru the cable to make a hole. then switch to a larger bit and drill again. keep going bigger and eventually the big bit will spin the cable sleeve and you can pull it out.
The inside bit of cable , you'll remove from inside the car.

Your brake hard line looks iffy.

I would replace the whole parking brake system from the pedal back, but thats just me. Do it once do it right, ya know?

Its going to be a PITA to do on jack stands, so if you can afford to take it in I would do so just to avoid the hassle, but it can be done in the driveway with hand tools. Have a vehicle to use if this is your DD, it may take a weekend to get it done right if you have all the new parts there and ready to go in.

Yeah, I'm hoping I'm not in under my head here. I'll give it another shot and if I get too frustrated I'll just take it in I guess. I hate doing that though. Plus I currently have it both calipers off for a rebuild and i'm changing to stainless lines, but the fittings where the flexi lines meet the hard lines have seen much better days and don't want to come apart...

I've done most of this job a bunch of time. Once two days ago as a matter of fact lol.

I've never had to take the cable out from the chassis. So I can't give you much on that. You need to pull that rusted bit out of the hub. Heat and hammer it I suppose. The actuator is probably salvageable. You'll have to do a lot of sanding and lubing though. It probably would be a good idea to get new but even without shoes, you're looking at $300 worth of parts. That damn actuator is like $60 a side!

If you do reuse the actuator, be sure not to lose the 2 dowels per side that hold it all together. Small ass buggers.

Yeah, when I installed my ss lines I only got the outers on in the rear. The inners were so froze up I couldn't get them off, rounded the fittings even with the proper line wrench. Im going to drop the rear sub frame next winter and replace all the hard lines, and the sub frame bushings.

Yeahhhh...I foresee the same thing going on with me. Last night I only got 1 of the 6 brake lines off. haha. Let them sit in oil all night. Hopefully they pop loose tonight.
I got the actuators freed up. I'll post pictures on that later.

So earlier I discovered that my front caliper that was sticking on me had bigger issues than I was hoping for. The piston was all rusted to hell and I couldn't get it out to save my life. So I said f*** it and ordered two new front calipers. No big.
So I figure, "Hey, I'll just rebuild the rears tonight and get those straight so when my new front calipers come I can finish this bad lad up...then I broke the bleeder screw off inside one of the rears. I tried every method known to man trying to remove that thing. No dice. Looks like I'm gonna get all fresh calipers. Greeeaaat. haha.

The only good news I have is that I got the end of the parking brake cable out of the hub area. I still need to get it off the other end at the tube that runs along the car, but that's for tomorrow.

It can get very frustrating when rust sets in. I spend 3 months eliminating *most* of the rust on my car. I know when I drop the sin frame there is more waiting for me. New brakes are never a bad investment though.

Yeah. I think I'm going to start actively looking for a rust free e30 that I can put away in the winter to protect it from the salt they spread on the roads here.
