Tires

Postby AustinR » Mon Mar 25, 2013 2:12 am

Anybody have experience with Dunlop Direzza dz101s? Thinkin about getting them. They look like a good option for the size I want (205/55/15).
Of course if you read reviews on them, you read everything from "These are the best tires evar! AWESOME in the rain!!!!" to "These tires BLOW. USELESS in the rain!!!!" lawlz.

Any other suggestions?

Other tires on Tire Rack available in that size:
Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500
Yokohama S.drive

If I drop the size to 205/50/15, I have WAY more options, but I don't want an undersized tire.

Thoughts?

Edit:
I should add, these will see spirited daily driver duty. Not really track time. If they do see track time, it will be like 2% of their life.

For example, if I go 205/50, I can get BFG g-Force Rival's. Gah they look cool.

To put it in perspective (for myself really) a 205/50/15 is .8 inches smaller in diameter than a 205/55/15. That's not very much...

The S.drive is the only 205/55/15 option. Everything else is terrible or R-comp. .8" is a big difference in rolling diameter, btw.

Any specific reason you want the DZ101 over the Star Spec? The Spec is easily the best DOT tire I've run, wet or dry, and fairly priced.

Haha you know my thoughts on this. Man tires!!! aka 205/50/15, any of the below:
Dunlop Direzza ZII
BFG Rival
Bridgestone RE-11A
Kumho XS
Hankook RS-3, may be only 225/45/15, can't remember
Yokohama AD08 (talk about a cool looking tire IMO)
Falken Azennis RT-615K

I think the main thing is he wants something with a bit higher treadwear, especially with the rear camber destroying tires.

For daily driving... I guess they'll work. I hated them for anything really. Got hot and muddy. Floppy sidewalls. They also delaminated after about 2 runs on the track.

I like my Toyo Proxxes for street driving. Good grip and long lasting, plus a good looking tire.

Tires

Postby ten2doyle102 » Mon Mar 25, 2013 4:07 pm

In my personal opinion.. If the tires are only going to see the track once or twice, do not get something with a tread wear of 140. They'll burn up a lot faster as you know. :)

I had BFg gforce sport comp 2 on my e30 and loved it. It was a very good tire. Check them out. I'll be buying another set for my s4 soon.

That and I don't think the star specs are available in 205/55/15. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Noted.

Looks like the widest those come in for a 15" wheel is 195. It'll look a touch stretched on my wheels = no go.
Thank you for the suggestion though!

FYI, star specs (Dunlop Direzza Z1) have been replaced by the Dunlop Direzza ZII. Which happen to be both cheaper and faster than the star specs ;) But no they do not come in a 205/55/15.

Well, that's confusing. I am fairly certain that I don't have 195's on my car... Hmm.... They must have discontinued that size or something. I think I had a 215/50/r15 or something close to that.
