Prop shaft/ gearbox clunk

Postby Mne666 » Thu Jun 06, 2013 6:28 am

Hi

I get a slight vibration at 45 and a clunk as I engage gear, my mechanic when driving the car said it was the shft that was out of balance but then realise that it would be the center support and bearing.

Anyway that's fine and that can be sorted but the car has got another fault and I don't know if its related bit it only seems to happen if its driven harder.

When I stop and let the foot off the clutch there is a slight grinding noise and it becomes very hard to select reverse, the noise stops if the clutch it engaged again.

Would these two faults be related?

Cheers

No not related. That noise is known as the 'getrag rattle' and is common with the g260. Its the throw out bearing, which is why the noise stops when the clutch is depressed. Not much you can do about it aside from replacing the TOB, and even then it could come back. If you can live with it it's not going to cause any damage, let it ride until you need to service the clutch. Mine does the same thing and I've been racing mine hard for 3 years with zero issues.

Prop shaft/ gearbox clunk

Cheers guys, great advice as usual.

So just out of interest why does it only make reverse hard to select? Does it sometimes make some noise when your driving? I'm sure I could hear something that stopped when the clutch was pressed but I might just be imaging it now.

It's nice to know its 'normal' and isn't going to cause anymore damage buy continuing to use it.

Cheers

Not really sure why reverse. The trans could be low on fluid. Reverse gear inherently is different since it forces things to spin the wrong direction. Your reverse gear snycros could be going out as well.

It might get worse. Probably will. But that timeline could be months, could be years.

The hard reverse is probably worn shifter bushings, a separate issue entirely.
