Power time! Recommend me a clutch

Postby blasphemy101 » Tue Jan 13, 2015 7:54 pm

So as it always goes with boost. I need a clutch! Well, I don't exactly need a clutch, but it's the next component limiting how much power I can make (well, put to the ground  ). I believe I already glazed the clutch once - I was doing a lot of highway driving on 15+ PSI and after some (legal) drag racing, it started slipping. After a while with the boost turned down, it holds 15 PSI again, but I'm keeping it below that to keep everything intact.

I still don't plan on making any more than 350whp, but since it is an auto-x/track car, I'm willing to sacrifice some driveability for durability. I'm looking at the Spec Stage 3 or Stage 4 (seems like the 3+ is a go-to for a street car), but I haven't heard the best things about Spec. I've noticed a lot of people run ClutchMasters as well. They're noticeably more expensive, which isn't the end of the world, but I want to make sure it's money well-spent.

I have the clutchmaster 400 clutch and it's served me very well. Been in the car about two years. Good drivability and I've never had any fade. I run about 18psi and have done about 10 auto-x and plenty of beatings. I would definitely recommend it. Bought mine through turbocharging dynamics.

Is that the TCD Stage 1 or Stage 2?

Neither. I just called him and told him what my setup was and what I use the car for, and he recommended it to me. He can get a lot more than just the two he advertises on the website.

Gotcha - it looks like the FX400 is pretty easy to keep ahold of, so it will go on the list :)

Yep, call Todd at TDC. He put my clutch setup together for me and said will easily hold 400+lb/ft reliably. Best part is it feel almost stock on the pedal, nice and smooth, not grabby at all.

That sounds nice! 400 is way higher than I should need. Do you have any idea what you paid for it?

Around $500, but that was maybe 4 years ago so price may have changed.

Remember that the 400hp is only a rough guideline for what the clutch can hold. A lot factors into how you will be using the car. If it's a DD and sees an auto-x once a month, then it should be just fine. If it's a track car that will be heavily abused, then it may not be enough even if you're making less than 400hp. What's your plan for the car?

Clutches are rated by torque, not HP. My clutch setup was rated at 450lb/ft if I remember correctly. If your going to be putting down more than that you'll need to move into a puck style unsprung setup, which sucks to daily drive.

Apparently, all the "little six" clutch setups are interchangeable as long as you use the right flywheel or ring gear and starter... That opens up some new possibilities, but I imagine I will go aftermarket since they are roughly the same price.
