Will a 3.64 LSD from a 535is be decent for Auto-x?

From the tranny down to wheel bearings.

Will a 3.64 LSD from a 535is be decent for Auto-x?

Postby ten2doyle102 » Wed Jun 17, 2015 1:14 am

Right now with my M50 swap w/ S52 cams and injectors bolted to a g320 trans w/ a standard 4.10 LSD 318is diff and lets just say... it's rev happy. At about 70mph, it revs at 3800 rpm. I think it's top speed is around 105-110mph lol.... Needless to say, I think I need to do something about this.

I love it's acceleration, but I end up shifting much more often because of it and I feel that I might be losing time around the Auto-x course because of it. My question is, would swapping to a 3.64LSD be a decent upgrade, or will it make it feel sluggish. A friend of mine is selling one for $300 which seems reasonable. It's only a 13% decrease, but I was hoping for someone with some first hand experience.

What to you think?

you mean ZF320? Not g320 right? That or I have no idea what a g320 is.

The ZF from an M3 has super short gears. The factory diff in that is 3.23 IIRC. So you'll want to get back to something just higher than that. 3.64 sounds about right. But still maybe short.

If you have a getrag 260, you'll want to get around a 3.73. But a 4.10 isn't so bad.

If you have a getrag 240... why do you have a getrag 240? I would suggest a new trans because first and second are short but 3+ are getrag 260 range. All sorts of not geared for power.

I would think the shorter gearing would be better for autox since your basically in 1st and 2nd the whole time. What's your redline set at? Could you stretch the shifting by upping the rev limiter a couple hundred RPM? Thats what I did and it made a huge difference in lap times. Isn't the 535 diff a large case diff too? Not sure thats a direct swap?

E28s use the ol' 188 diff. Just swap on a new face plate and go!

Think about the difference in ratio tho. I had a 3.73 with my last S52 swap with a ZF trans. I'd just start in second gear in regular driving because I'd have to shift so soon in first. I can't imagine a 4.10!

My bad. I have a ZF320 in my car. lol!

The 4.10 is ridiculous in first gear. It can light up the tires pretty easily in first, second is decent but I run out of revs too fast. Tony,my limiter is at 6500 right now until I can afford the turner chip for the m50 w/ s5x cams and injectors.

I think I am going to try the 3.64 out and see what happens. Most of the time when I would need to shift is usually about a second too early so hopefully this will help.

It'll be like a 4.10 is to a regular M20 E30.

I can't imagine a 4.10 in my car, I don't get traction until half way through 2nd on sticky 225s as is.

I need to get some wider wheels to run a wider tire, or I'll just have to go jog wild and cut the rear fenders off and go flares. Lol. I actually have 205s on it now. :)

My 225s are and inch wider than the 245 toyos I used to run. Other than flairs I physically can't fit a wider tire at this ride height. I do like the rocket bunny flairs though. :)

A little update on this, it's actually a 3.46LSD so that should be even better for city driving, but I don't know how I will like it for Auto. I am sure it will be decent either way. I should have it in a couple weeks. :)
