some info from a european diff building friend of mine;
****************
"Rebuild depends on client, for street sports use a 40% lock is enough, you get that with three clutches.
For racing I use four clutches and change the pressure rings from 45º to 30º - this way you get 75% lock up rate.

To add four cluches you need to take off 4mm of material from the cover (use old type diff covers, they are thicker and have thinner bellevue washers)

-If you don't change the pressure ring to a 30º´s you get 60%. To get 90% you need 5 cluthces, but its too much"
**************

- why too much, i do not know- perhaps hard to fit, machining is excessive, etc.

Personally my 4 plate diff has stock pressure ring 45% ramp, I did not machine the cover- I just juggled plates between the 3 diffs I took apart to make things fit. the lockup rate is mos def. more than double the stock 25%,

Seems like I might be doing a 4 clutch diff. Muahahaha.

I was checking out the extra clutch upgrade on e30 a while back. There is a lot of buzz on drifting forums about modifying clutch type stock diffs for more lockup. The general consensus is that they still lack the locking power of a welded or 1.5/2 way. Or that they fail prematurely when subjected to the punishment associated with the little game we play. I'm interested to see how this pans out.

I haven't seen anyone do bimmer world clutches in their BMW lsd and drift them. I haven't even seen someone with stock clutches and thicker plates. I've seen a handful of people do similar things and autox it. Can you link me to these threads and pages?

I plan to drift and do a "postmortem" and see how things panned out. I'm actually worried I'll have too much lock up. Not too little.

I'm trying to get better at this youtube thing. Took me 5 takes to get an intro down. sigh.

It isn't BMW specific. But other people have tried to over pack clutch type diffs and drift on them with little success. I will try to find the threads. I like the welded option because its reliable and costs next to nothing. Its not the best (performance wise) by any means, but plenty of people are competitive with it. It sucks that a decent LSD for these cars is like $1700. Thats like...my whole build budget lol.

I'd like to see how other people did it. I feel like this is a very reliable way of adding lockup without too much hassle.

Your method seems well thought out and effective. I think the major test will be longevity. When is this going back in?
