I guess if it works for them. Not an expensive upgrade imo.

heya Yoshi new to the forum here not long got an e-30 and looking for some drifty fun, and then looked up diff modifications and happened upon this thread, i was wondering how easy or hard it is to set a diff up as ive never attempted this before, but not afraid of trying, so i spose by reading the thread i get the general idea and principals of it its probs best if i get a spare diff and go from there, if you coud give me some hints tips difficulties etc etc that'd be grets Yoshit cheers in advance,Richard

Welcome aboard!

The diff is pretty black magic until you attempt it. It goes together and comes apart like anything else in a car. I would recommend writing down and keeping track of the order things came out in. Down to what side it came out of. That way you know everything is back in the right spot. Other than that, it is VERY straight forward.

You might want to get new bolts for the hat piece for the diff itself. I always strip them when taking them out.

yeah im looking into this as an investment i live in the uk atm and this is defo a cheaper way of getting more lock than getting a kaaz or other brand name diff's, im not interested if i can do this im a lil nervy about setting up things like backlash etc etc

Unless you replace the bearings or are swapping pieces from another diff, you shouldn't have to worry about backlash and pinion depth.

To double check, do the paint method. I think I explained that. If not. I can show you how.

I used generic gear oil for break in. But it doesn't even seem like it needs it. The fluid was just as clear as when it went in. And i did a full day of slidey slide.

I believe this break down is from the 944: http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-part ... 305-05.php

The 944 clutches are the same as the stock E30 ones. Bimmer world clutches are better for sport use FYI.

hey Yoshi-

thanks for using my write up, im glad you are getting use out of it.

with 4 discs, the aftermarket diff builders are modding center section to DECREASE lockup, as the 4 clutch + stock unit is VERY TIGHT.

its durable to a point, I did do alot of drifting with my E36m, but the car was really setup for WANGAN racing @ the top end.

if you are professional drifter, you will run a welded if you are poor, or get a sponsor for a built unit or aftermarket. I prefer KAAZ or cusco for aftermarket, have had those in prior drift cars.

If your ever interested in a locked diff, I like the way this guy did his:

http://e21jps.webs.com/driveline.htm

He's got some other cool shit on his site too.
