Rack and Pinion Rebuild

Postby beemnmatt » Mon Mar 29, 2010 3:30 pm

Hello everybody! Its been a while since Ive been on.... Life is busy! Anyway my little dream car spit some ugly fluid out of its bellows and I think its new rack and pinion time. I think the install is pretty straight forward, but I am wondering what my options are on parts. I heard an e36 r/p can fit? What are the advantages of that? Any advise would be awesome!

Matt

E36 racks have less turns lock to lock. how many depend on what model e36 the rack came from. It does require some spacers to put on. Def a recommended swap.

Ok, got it. Which model is preferred? I was thinking I have to order one new, but not sure which model. Uh, when you say spacers.....

Nah new is too expensive. you can put in new seals for cheap ( I should make a write up).

But yes, those are the spacers I mean. You can make your own from hope depot for $5. but premade ones are piece of mind you know?

I agree on the expensive part.... Are seals straight forward or are there any special tools required?

Write ups are good!

It requires a seal puller. But you can improvise that.

unless you plan to autox or race the car I would go with a stock replacement. You know you need to modify the steering linkage from the column as well to fit the e36 or e46 racks.

It's the same price tho... why not upgrade? The modification of the linkage is what I was talking about above.

I wouldn't say it's the same price, I got a warrantied OE used rack from Jordan for like $80 shipped.

That's a special deal though. Most of the places youll find a rack, it's the same.

not really a special deal, I would think Jordan would give that price to anyone since it was through his work. Don't get me wrong, the e36/e46 racks are an upgrade, just may not be needed for street car.

Thanks!
