Steering guibo delete for 5 bucks

Postby Rick » Wed Nov 30, 2011 3:24 am

Here is a relatively cheap and easy to do mod. My wheel felt a little dead around center. Actually I dident really notice it untill a friend of mine drove my car and pointed it out. He's used to driving new vehicles

Disclaimer: If you screw up and kill yourself because you do a shit job its not my fault! All liability waived!

Removed from car and guibo already removed

Grind off rivet heads to remove guibo. Used angle grinder (Yoshi's favorite tool)

Put back together with quality bolts and the spacers. The spacers consist of a shaft collars (the ones with a setscrew) and a washer at each end. Take the Unit to the hardware store with you and find bolts with a diameter that fits the holes the closest. Then find shaft collars that the bolts fit through.

Reinstall and enjoy tight steering. Please be careful doing this, make sure you get it seated on the splines on the car correctly, and torqued correctly. Use grade 8 or higher bolt quality. Use all metal locknuts, not "nylock" type

Image
Crappy picture. I'll get a better on next time im in there.

Very cool! I may have to do this eventually, probly if/when the car gets a tighter ratio steering rack. I saw somewhere that somebody made a solid steering shaft that eliminated all of those joints. Looked really cool, but if I remember right it wasn't cheap. Can't seem to find it anymore either.

I'm just not sure that's safe. I thought the rubber disk was there for safety.

What would make it safer though? I always assumed it was just for vibration reduction.

There are a ton of cars that don't use them I believe. I think they are just for dampening purposes. I don't really know what safety issue taking it out would create. I'm assuming its purpose is something like the guibo on the drive shaft.

agreed. If anything this mod is a safety upgrade considering most the steering guibos in these cars are original and badly worn.

Correct. The guibo is just so you dont feel any vibration in the wheel. The safety feature is the two pin yoke joint that allow the assembly to collapse.

Its really nice above 60, when the tiny mush of the guibo can really be noticed. Also makes the wheel more communicative on what the tires are doing. Already very good in these cars but better now.

I was told it was supposed to "snap" in case of a crash and keep the steering wheel from ending up in your chest.

*shrugs*

I might do this mod though.

never thought of that. I guess you can lump this mod in with removing ABS, and airbags. ;)

my excuse is that my ABS never worked and I brake better without it. My car also never came with an air bag.

No safety compromise as far as I can see. The rubber guibo couldent compress anyway. This is done by the two yokes and pins (red arrows). See below.

Might have to try this mod. My guibo is shot and I can't even find a place to order a new one :?
Could this cause any binding in the u-joints since it changes the orientation to each other by 90*?
