A couple questions about rear struts...

Springs and shocks. What keeps your car tight around corners?

Interesting, it always looks like iS springs are a little lower than standard springs (they are a little stiffer), I wonder if they are a similar height...

ANYWAYS...I gave Karen at Bilstein Aftermarket and Motorsports - East a call, and I learned two things:

1) It's pronounced BilSTINE, not BilSTEEN.

2) Bilstein Sports are fine for stock springs, but are made to accomodate stiffer/lower springs. On the flipside, are stiffer/less comfortable than HDs. She suggested Sports if I was planning to get lowering springs in the future.

I learned one other thing - my car is so old, my original Bilstein struts say "Made in Western Germany"

+1

My J Stock setup is twice as stiff as the bsport/H&R combo and rides way better on the street.

The J Stock setup looks nice. Is it really that much ($300) better?

As far as IS springs go, (Copied from spring rate sticky)

Spring---------------------Front(lb/in.)------------------Rear(lb/in.)

Stock 325i*-----------------------106-------------------------245
Stock 325is*----------------------118-------------------------265
Stock 325ix*----------------------106-------------------------308
Stock M3*-------------------------114------------------------314
Stock M3--------------------------140------------------------250

IS springs may be stiffer, but not by much. 12/20 lb/in is a pretty small difference.

Tony, you really think the J-stocks ride better than H&R race on the street? That's pretty nuts.

J stocks are 200-900 progressive rates on the front. So street driving is still nice.

Ahhh. Didn't really think about the progressive rate. Isn't that less than ideal though for track use, takes longer for the spring to 'load up?"

About a month ago I dropped close to $800 on tires I can't even use on the street for essentially a $250 car...

There's also the problem of needing them pretty much immediately. I don't think running J Stock struts with stock springs would feel very nice.

J stock is the ultimate in streetability with great track performance. Get it and don't look back. Everything else seriously pales in comparison. Get it and don't look back.

Also dont' think about your car as a $200 car. Cuz with that mentality, your car will always be a low class pile of crap. It is the sum of its parts.

I really want to, because it looks like a definite step up from the H&R/Billy combo. Looks like I should give TMS a call to discuss my options...

Haha I know. It's just kinda entertaining to remember how much I bought the car for. Just try not to think about how much has been spent on it since.

I went from HR sport to HR race to J stock like but coils. I've driven a few J stock cars as well. Sport is shit. HR race is mildly better than the HR sport shit. J stock is actually a track worthy suspension. HR Race is a giant pile of horse shit, oh my god, don't buy it.
