Springs and shocks. What keeps your car tight around corners?

swear no E30 people listen to me about spring rates

Postby Yoshi » Tue Jan 15, 2013 12:43 pm

Well minus tony lol.

http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116538

First thing people jump to are alignment specs. Makes sense. One mention of tire pressure. But no one notices the glaring 600/500 spring rates? Seriously? It's like E30 suspension 101 and EVERYONE (and their mother) seem to ignore it.

I run 12k/18k. Which is 670/1000. Which is very close to the Jstock 680/1026. But Nooooo everyone tells me it's too stiff. Blah blah you'll break bones. Then don't complain when you're running HALF the rear rate of J stock with the full rate of the front >_<

I'm not too far from your rates with 600 front/700 rear.

300# in the rear is a huge difference. The effective rate difference is around 600#!

Lol.

J Stock is progressive right? How does it compare to H&R race for ride quality? Would you recommend J Stock for a street car?

j stock is 200-900 progressive. It's decent on the road. No comparison to the HR race, those, I consider street springs all the way. Still feels like stock to me.

There is no way you can say with a straight face that H&R race springs with billie sports feel stock. That's my setup and it's rock solid compared to what it used to be. The thing rides like a lumber truck.

This all makes me even more curious about valving, as apposed to spring rates. It seems like that could have more to do with ride "comfort" and handling than spring rates.

I don't know. the weight of the motor should make the front grippier. So I might leave it as is. Gonna see how it feels then work from there.

Well... after driving around in the 350k E30, it feels like it has no shocks. Every bump is like a water bed. HR Race feel like what the DD rates/shocks should be. It's very comfortable to me.

What shocks did you have accompanying the races?

I had my billie sports with m3 springs for a little while before I got the H&R's. I don't remember there being a difference in ride quality going from the m3 springs (114/314) to the H&R's (315/570). That's why I think it has more to do with the shocks than anything.

I wish I had a bunch of money that I could buy a bunch of different suspension setups with so I could learn how this stuff works together.

I had H&R Race before my Jstocks, and the Jstock rides better on the street than the H&R, a lot better.

Tony.

Are the front Bilstein cartridges in TMS J-stock package specially valved for the J-stock springs?
The rears are definitely revalved, but I can't feel any difference between the fronts and regular Bilstein sport fronts....It's kinda pissing me off...feels too soft in rebound.

Yeah, the fronts are valved for the springs. They are a little soft on rebound I agree. Since the springs are progressive I think the shocks are valved for the median rate instead of the higher rate. When these shocks are toast I'll probably try some double adjustable shocks to see if I can dial in a better feel.
