odd that just a nylock vs a locking nut made that much difference.

Well, it was a re-used nylock versus a new self-locking nut. I think it has more to do with using fresh hardware, than it does with which grade. After all, the nut I re-used had been doing its job just fine before I removed and re-installed it.
