MVRK - DIY - Custom Carpet - 8lbs

Postby mvrk10256 » Sun Jan 01, 2012 12:58 am

So this is my DIY for making your own carpet for the e30 that will weight less than 8lbs.

A note: Mine didn't turn out perfect, The ideas outlined here are solid, but it all comes down to execution. I will say this though. The NVH reduction between no carpet and this set up is significant.

The first task is to strip out everything. Old carpet (I have a DIY on here for that). Once its all out you can begin. Also remove the center console and the rear speaker tray.

gonna have to lift these bad boys as well.

Step one is to vacuum everything while its out.

Here are the stuff you need. Non backed auto carpet, 3/8" closed cell foam, Xacto knife, and 1081 Auto Glue

2. Begin inserting the foam. Cut medium sized pieces, and use duct tape to secure.

There is no good way of explaining, you just have to do it.

Next begin cutting the carpet, spray the glue on the foam, and stick down the carpet, works best if you stick glue on both surfaces.

Last step is to recover the rear speaker panel.

Remove the 4 screws per speaker pod and remove it. unscrew that little black thing.

Just peel the old carpet off.

Cut some carpet and spray both sides.

Done.

Not perfect but much better than nothing. Could have been done better, but I suck at arts and crafts time.

Looks great! Definitely looks better than the way stock fits back in without padding.
