Plastic bumpers vs. diving boards

Postby Dontrusthise30 » Sat Jun 02, 2012 1:15 am

So, I've been working on lightening my diving boards since finding zinno plastics has been impossible. When I first weighed my front bumper it was 16.5lbs and after taking some metal out it's down to 12. I also cut my shocks off and welded the ends which saved about 5lbs between the two. How much does the plastic bumper weigh without the support piece? Basically with my lightened bumper and the mounts it comes to about 14lbs total. When mounted, you can't tell anything has been changed. I'm all about saving weight, so if plastics are really that much lighter I'll continue my search and not even bother with the back bumper. From looking at it though, I'd say I can take a lot more weight out of the back one than the front. Here's some pics:

I didn't weight mine when I had it apart, but if I had to guess I would say the front plastic without the core weighs about 12-14lbs, but the core weighs a freaking ton. The rear is probably pretty close to the front. If your down to 14lbs total for the front bumper assy your probably lighter than plastics.

The core weighs probably 10lbs. the shell on the outside maybe 1. I'm too lazy to take my bumpers off...

So, those are two very different responses haha. Tony says 12ish for the bumper without the core and yoshi says 1. I'm assuming 1 is a typo for 10?

A fiberglass knockoff of a Mtech bumper shell with some additional fiberglass reinforcement (but chunks of the bumper missing) weighs 14lbs +-2.5lbs. I haven't weighed the plastic shell, but having handled a few, 5-10lbs is within the realm of possibility. The trim pieces alone are just short of a pound. The core weighs a good 10-15lbs. Meanwhile, I can lift an aluminum diving board + shocks + brackets with two fingers, and I am a weakling (and can't easily do that with a plastic front bumper + core). Anyone have access to an accurate scale? Hell, even a precise one will do if accuracy isn't possible.

I'm talking about the GF core and the plastic shell that goes over it. That shell is def no more than 2 lbs...
