Skid plate for m50 / s50 swap

Postby Terry » Tue Aug 05, 2014 4:11 am

The shop doing my swap tells me that I probably need a skid plate. I saw Yoshi posted on another forum about having a skidplate for an s52 swap.
Just wondering if HIK (company) is the only game for this, or if a decently talented welder could fab this up?
Also wondering about how critical the skid plate is on this swap with a car slightly lower than stock (HR springs).

The M50 based oilpan sits lower than the M20 ones. And you're likely to hit the M20 ones with just HR sports. I don't know if robert still sells his skid plates but it's super strong. The race skids one relies on your core support and subframe but doesn't have any real strength in the middle. So it's more like a fuse. One good hit and you really should replace it.

You can fab your own. I would just make sure it's stiff enough that it won't give up on the first impact.

Robert shut e30motorwerks down, but his fabricator (HIK) still sells the skid plates I believe. Best plate for an e30 period, don't waste your money on the other ones. Obviously a talented fabricator could make something up, but the Peerless plate has years of R&D in it, so its doubtful you will get the quality for cheaper.

Any comment on the ones floating on ebay:

Bottom line is price: 165 on ebay vs. 330 for the peerless one.

People in the DC/Baltimore area with the red46 plates have still cracked pans with them installed. Go HIK or go home; I've got them on both my E30s, and unless you need to not run it due to sanctioning body rules for a class you intend to race in, they will save your oil pan.

$300 now or new motor later? I'd rather pay a bit more to be DAMN sure it's good.

Too late, shop took the initiative to order the ebay (red46) one, and I didn't really want to rock the boat by telling him to send it back.
He said he had dealt with his M20 plate before and liked it.
So I guess I'll chime in later next week with a review on it.

Maybe put a hoop on it that attaches to the frame.
