E36 window switch to E30 sunroof mod

Why do I have to unlock my doors through my trunk?

E36 window switch to E30 sunroof mod

Postby M20_fever » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:26 pm

I've seen lots of people fit e36 window switches to the e30 windows, which I will be doing, but I had never seen anyone fit one to the sunroof switch. I learned a lot about electrical along the way and ended up with a nice clean install that will match the window switches. I used a blue base 5 wire e36 switch, but the small white base switches should work also, though you will need to pull out the continuity tester to find the switched leads.

ok, for blue base e36 switch to e30 sunroof the pin out is:

e30 Green/Blue to e36 Green/White (pin #5)
e30 Green to e36 Blue (pin #3)
e30 Brown to e36 Blue/Green (pin #6)
e30 Brown to e36 Black/Yellow (pin #1)
e30 Black to e36 Black (pin #4)

In order for the blue base (and likely the white base) switch to fit in the sunroof switch spot I had to remove the base of the switch and connect the e30 sunroof wires directly to the e36 switch pins. I also had to use a file to open the switch hole up slightly. Be sure to file it towards the back of the car since opening the front side will leave the switch bezel hanging over the edge of the overhead panel.

Here are a couple pics of the finished install.

That reminds me... Every time I visit an e36 at the yards I forget to check the sunroof switch. Is it a regular one, or is it one of the ones that supposedly we can't use for our windows?

You can use any switch you like. But the large white and blue base switches are basically slice and solder and your good to go.

The one touch down switches are more complex then that.

What I meant was which type do they use for the sunroof? Is it one like the white or blue large base, or do they use a special one like the one touch or something?

btw, I'm determined to figure out a cheap way to wire up the one-touch switches for our cars. Shouldn't be much more than a relay and a few cheap components.
