173 question

Postby 87e30 » Mon Jan 30, 2012 9:31 pm

So turns out to use the new injectors I just bought AND a chip I supposedly need to upgrade from my green label 153 to a 173 ECU. I don't mind, as I was considering upgrading anyway so I could do the stomp test. The question is, is there any difference between label colors? I've heard about green, gray, and orange so far. Is any better than any other?

Oh, another question... Could there be any problems caused by the upgrade? Most ppl say it'll drop right in, but I want to be sure.

Any ecu ending in 173 will be the same. I've heard the different colors use slightly different maps, but nothing measurable performance wise.

As far as swapping from a 153 to a 173 im not totally sure. Does your car have the single cps on the accessory drive trigger wheel, or two sensors in the bell housing? I believe all 173 equipped cars used the cps on the crank pulley so that might be an issue. Just guessing on that.

My car is an 87 is, and I believe yours (87e30) is too. Mine has the 173, although I am not sure if that was put in by a PO or not. But I do have the single CPS off of the front pulley as Tony stated.

Have sensor on crank pulley. Anything else I should take not of before doing the swap?

If yours has the CPS on the crank then its the latest harness design so everything else should be the same for both ECUs.

I know there's a few differences in the harness. I think it was the oil level sensor has a different amount of wires between my original engine and the one that's in there now (from an 88 325i). Also the wires going to the injectors. My harness has separate wires going to each injector. The part of the harness that we cut on the 88 engine had the injector wires in 2 groups of 3, and there was 1 or 2 less wires if I remember correctly.

Hmm, id have to look at my injector harness, but I thought it was individual sets of two wires for each injector. Either way I think the 153 a d 173 are interchangeable. I forgot you swapped a later motor in though. Your sure it was an 'i' and not an seta being from '88?

Yeah, it's an i. I have a picture of the VIN from the car I pulled it from somewhere. When I find it I'll run it and see exactly what that car had.

grr, I was hoping to install everything this weekend but he's not gonna mail the stuff out until Saturday. Oh well, I can wait another week. It'll give me time to hopefully finish figuring out everything else that's wrong.

Yeah, I haven't seen any posts from you in a while. I haven't been very active lately myself. I haven't really been reading anyones elses threads either. Been too busy working long days and trying to run a side business. Engine wasn't running right. Got it running a lot better now, so I'm gonna try to make it go faster too. Still have some bugs to work out.

I'll send you my number tomorrow. Don't wanna bother you at 2:30am.
