No crank!

Why do I have to unlock my doors through my trunk?

No crank!

Postby 87e30 » Sun Sep 16, 2012 4:37 am

First off, hello again to all. I've been away a while. Got really bummed out when I kissed the rear end of the pick up and haven't done any work on my car since I got it back on the road. Now I have a new and somewhat strange problem...

This morning I drove to work and all was good. Parked my car, worked a 13+ hour shift, and got into my car to drive home. Put key in ignition, turn, nothing. Well all the lights work, battery reads 12.59v, radio works, power antenna works, I hear the fuel pump, dash lights work, check lights work, gauges work, windshield wipers work, windows and sunroof do NOT work. Fuse 19 was blown, replaced and no change in anything. Now I'm stuck here at the shop without a working car (with roof open and windows part way down) and I have to be back here in like 7 hours for another 13+ hour shift.

So any ideas what could cause the windows and sunroof to stop working as well as not cranking? No noise from the starter at all. Lights don't dim when I turn key. I'm by myself, so I can't really bang on the starter while I turn the key, but I did smack the hell out of it with a 1/2 inch Craftsman ratchet several times and still nothing when I turn the key.

Don't think this will make any difference, but I never fixed my power lock problem that I've had for quite some time. I just left them alone when they stopped working altogether right after they decided to lock me in the car that one time.

Hmm. I guess just check your grounds? Could be the ignition switch too I suppose. Can you jump the starter to get it to crank? (I don't actually know how to do this, but I've seen it done)

I'm pretty sure it's not the ignition switch. Everything comes on when you turn the key, just like it should, and the door chime doesn't sound when the key is in the crank (start) position. I originally thought I might have a bad ground somewhere, but that wouldn't explain why the starter AND the windows stopped working at the same time.

I don't get how the starter and the windows are linked at all though. Seems like two different problems, but maybe not. That would be quite the coincidence.
Do you have the factory radio? Something with the alarm system maybe? Just throwing guesses out there. haha.

I don't see a link between them either which is what's really confusing the crap outta me.

Sony head unit (dunno what model, it was in the car when I bought it). No alarm.

Also, back to back 13's on Sat/Sun? That completely sucks.

Forgot to mention I already tried to push start it. Kinda hard to do alone on uneven ground though. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to recruit some help and get it running. I'm pretty sure I have a spare starter if that turns out to be the problem. But again, a bad starter wouldn't cause the power windows to go out. AAAARRRRGHHHHHHH!!!!

Screw you guys, I'm going home! </Cartman>

It's coming up on 2am here and I need to get some sleep. Gonna borrow a vehicle from here to get home and nap. Feel free to brainstorm and hopefully someone has some good ideas.

Not sure what year they started with the 4 wire starters, thought it was just the late models but it may have started in '87. The new style starters have accessory interrupt circuit that cuts power to the windows/power roof while cranking to keep voltage from dropping. If the interrupt circuit is fried I would guess it could cause this issue.

not a starter. everything else would work then. I think your battery is just dead man. Electric motors (like the ones on your windows/starter motor) take a lot of AMPS. Not necessarily VOLTS.

Get a jump and be happy.

Been there, done that. First thing I did was grab my freshly charged booster pack and hooked it up. Didn't do anything at all. BTW headlights come on full brightness and don't dim if I hit my window switches or try to start the car. Definitely not a battery issue.

My car is an 87, but the engine and most accessories are from an 88. I do remember there being a difference between the 2 starters when I swapped the engine, but I don't remember which one I used.

I was planning on throwing my car up on the lift today if towing was slow, but I seriously twisted the shit out of my back climbing under a Cadillac this morning. I can barely move right now so I don't think I'll be pushing my car into the shop alone.
