No crank!

Why do I have to unlock my doors through my trunk?

The OBC has an immobilizer feature that can cause no start problems.

Yeah, but that just cuts fuel and spark. It SHOULD still crank... And I'm pretty sure that wouldn't interfere with the windows, sunroof, and blower motor.

So everything seems to be working perfectly fine since Saturday after the first time I started my car (using a wrench to short the starter wires). It's kind of hard to try and diagnose a problem that isn't happening.

Intermittant problems are the worst to diagnose. My e34 has been throwing the check engine light on for a while now but it never even stays on long enough to read the codes haha.

Based on the behavior I would guess its the ignition itself.

Forgot to update this before I went off to Michigan for a week. I finally tracked down the problem. Don't know if I mentioned this before or not, but I also noticed sometimes when driving my blower would come on if I got on the gas really hard, but it usually turned off within a few seconds.

Many of the times I was starting my car by shorting the terminals on the starter with a wrench I noticed that while my hand was down there I would hear the blower motor come on and usually right back off. So I started shaking around all the wires each time I started the car to try getting the blower to STAY running. I found if I grabbed the big bunch of wires in the harness and moved it back and forth I could usually get the blower to stay on. As long as the blower motor is working the windows and sunroof also work, but it still wouldn't start with the key. I tried wiggling around different wires coming off the harness each time to see if I could find out which one was loose or whatever, as well as checking all the connections on EVERYTHING whether it was related to the problems or not. I eventually found the wire coming from the harness going to the starter is all I had to wiggle to get the blower to come on. It would come on until I let the wire go, then turn off again. I pulled the wire and wedged it in so it wouldn't move and all has been working flawlessly since. One of these years I'll actually check on it to see what exactly is wrong with it, but it works for now. But with my luck right after I post this it'll stop working again. :-P

lol, that bit of info would have helped in disgnosing. Does your car have the late style starter with the accessory interupt wire?

It does have the late model starter, but the accessory wire isn't being used. When I swapped the engine I decided to use the starter from the 88 because my original starter looked a little crusty. When I wired it up I just left the extra terminal alone. I think I even asked in my build thread what the extra terminal was for, but not positive.

A few days before my trip I was actually about to rig things up to work until I had a chance to fix it right. I bought a pushbutton switch that I was going to install under the dash to start the car, and I crimped blade ends onto a couple short pieces of wire to bypass the load relays. I believe it was the day I planned on rigging everything that I found the trouble causing wire.

It's baaaaaackkk. Yesterday when I went to start my car to go to work I got the same problems as over a year ago. I didn't fix anything that time, and this morning it worked as it should. No idea what's going on. Thinking maybe ignition switch.

Put key in, turn, radio and lights all work, no crank and no power window action. Can start car by jumping the starter with a screwdriver. Windows still no workie while driving. Got most of the way to work and the windows started working again. Get to work, windows still work, turn key off and try to start right away and no crank and no window action. The only thing that did anything at all between the time the windows worked and stopped working is the key turned off and right back on, so I'm thinking it's gotta be the ignition switch. Just started up for me a few minutes ago when I went to warm the car up to go home from work.

Lol I just re-read my last post from when I got it working again. I forgot about that damn wire. Perhaps I'll have another look at that before ordering a switch. I dunno if my blower works or not because it burnt out during the few weeks it was like -18 degrees.

So I found out this really cool thing from EricT or whatever his board name is.

Take out your key tumbler! There's a spot where you can shove in a paper clip. Turn the key to like on or acc, I forget which and jam that bitch deep in there (needs to go very deep (that's what she said)). Then, you should be able to pull out the tumbler innards from the whole assembly. From there, you can take a big ass flat tip, press in to the center piece so it depresses and crank all the way over normally.

This will rule out your tumbler being uncooperative. If it's still being a bitch, I suspect wiring. We should break out some diagrams to take a look.
