ACK! I need to use hand signals when turning!

Why do I have to unlock my doors through my trunk?

ACK! I need to use hand signals when turning!

Postby 87e30 » Wed Apr 23, 2014 11:14 pm

Yesterday morning my blinkers worked all the way to work until I was a block away, making a left turn in front of a cop who was driving toward me. I flicked my blinkers on, as I always do when turning, but no blinkage. When leaving work yesterday I checked them, still not working, looked at the fuse, which didn't look blown, but decided to change it anyway. New fuse and blinkers work fine. Put the original fuse in and blinkers still work fine. Drive home to realize blinkers are not working again. This morning I play with the fuse when leaving for work and still no blinkers, and also notice wipers do not work either. Now the wiper switch has always given me problems due to the cruise controls being floppy, but before this they always worked if I jiggled the cruise. My hazard lights do function normally. Any idea what could be wrong with my blinkers and wipers now?

Switch is probably on the fritz. Make sure the wiring is done right on it.

I slapped the top of the fuse box and everything started working again. I'm thinking bad connection on a relay.

Pretty sure those relays aren't in the fuse box. Turn signal ones are under the steering column IIRC.

The turn signal relay is under the steering column see pic below.
It sounds like it could be a bad ground. My car's wiper wouldn't work until I installed the turn signal stalk (which my car didn't have) and connected the turn stalk ground.

Well I had the wipers and blinkers turned on when I smacked the top of the fuse box. I heard and felt a click in one of the relays, don't ask me which one, and all of a sudden the blinker was blinking, and the wipers were wiping. It works, I'm not gonna mess with it. lol

haha, nice. Just hit the junk yard and grab a handful of relays and replace them all.

Yeah, grounding relay or the actual connection at the light. Mine was doing it randomly so I just slapped the actual lens cover to the blinker a few times and it's worked since. Good thing it did cause I was in Austria when they went out...

Most of those relays are just regular ones. I think you can even get them from the "down the street" auto store.

I stared at my diagrams a bit. The horn relay is the #2 relay in the fuse box. If you stand on the driver's side fender staring at the fuse box, it's second from the left on the bottom row.

FYI

I've got bags full of original BMW fuses and relays from the yards. :-D Oh yeah, the little plastic fuse pullers too.

Now I just need to get another fuse box cover. I had one that wasn't cracked, but my hood popped open while driving 60mph (damn New Jersey potholes) and it flew out. I have one that's in mint condition, but I don't want to use it lol, those things are hard to find.

I actually used one of my spare BMW fuses when troubleshooting the problem with the flatbed yesterday while I was waiting for the $8 relay from Pep Boys to get delivered. Why on earth are they so expensive there? I get them for 45 cents each from my supplier in Long Island.

It actually happened to me twice in the same car. I have since lubricated the shit out of my hood latch so it locks properly and the hood no longer pops open when I'm driving.
