E30 electrics

Postby e30 baur » Fri Mar 27, 2015 7:03 am

Hi there.
I have an e30 318i 1988 and all of a sudden a lot of the electrics don't work.
Electric windows stopped but electric sunroof works. Headlights and beams stopped but side lights and indicators work. Central locking works. Interior lights work. Heater has stopped.

I haven't checked yet but i can't imagine it's several fuses failing all at once. I am hoping to get at it over the weekwnd but what should i look for?

Coincidently my 1993 e30 has just done exactly the same.

Ah man. There's likely a short somewhere. If you pop in fuses and it immediately pops or if it pops the moment you hit switches, you'll want to check for shorts. Might be a relay in the end. I dunno.

Basically, try all the fuses, what keeps popping, make a list. I got some wiring diagrams I can look through for you.

Do the wipers, blinkers, and horn work? I had a problem a while back where several things stopped working at the same time. Turned out to be a bad solder connection INSIDE the fusebox. If you search my posts there are pictures. If I remember correctly my windows, horn, blinkers, and blower motor stopped working together. Don't remember if the sunroof still worked, but I think it did. You may have the exact same problem that I had. If you do, get yourself a power probe and check for voltage on all the fuses of the things that stopped working. If you get no reading turn on all the accessories and feed power to ONE of the fuses and see if they all go on. If so you need to whip out a soldering iron and crack open that fuse box.
