Designed an E30 M3 Decorative Tray for Manufacturing Process

Postby WildKarrde » Fri Mar 07, 2014 8:49 pm

So, one of my classes this semester is manufacturing processes, and one of our labs is to design a widget in Solidworks, build it using rapid prototyping, sand cast it, and then make an aluminum cast of it. The best widget from the class will be used in the senior project for mass production. We only have 3in^3 of aluminum to work with, so there isn't a huge amount of flexibility with that we can do. Most people use this opportunity to make a keychain with their name on it, but I wanted to do something a bit different. I settled on a 3" by 3" frame with an E30 M3 silhouette in the middle. I'm using 2.74in^3 of material, so pretty close, lol. I doubt my widget will be used for the senior project, as similar things have been done in the past, and I know at least 2 or 3 other students made a unique part. I'm still fairly proud of it though. The rapid prototype should be done next week, but here's some pics of the model I turned in today.

Honorable mention goes to the widget I really wanted to make, but as I feared about half way through drawing the track, my instructor confirmed today that the detailing was just too fine to reliably predict a successful sand casting. When I finished this part I made the E30 as a backup.

Yeah, come to think of it, it would probably make an awesome coaster!

You just gave purpose to my design, when I made it I had no aspirations to give it a practical application, lol.

Get me about $2500 in orders and I'll buy a good 3D printer to mass produce it with, lol.

My first thought was ashtray. I don't smoke, but I'd leave out a cool e30 m3 ashtray at my house for people to wish they could use. "E30" could be filled in with the /// colors. How thick is the aluminum? Coaster would be cool too.

So do I. You can get 3d printers for around $1k now, they are really coming down in price. I know someone on another forum that bought one and started printing parts for forum members and he has basically paid for it already.

Pretty cool model, should be a nice looking part. I made a brass nosed finishing hammer for my manufacturing processes class, not nearly as cool but it was fun to use both manual lathes and CNC to do it.

I really want a Makerbot... but sadly I don't have a spare $1000 lying around for even a lesser expensive model. Maybe I should try putting together a kickstarter campaign.

Well, our prints were all done today. The teacher is keeping them until the sand casts are made, but I took a few pics of mine. I'm quite pleased with how it's turned out so far. Spring break is next week, so it's gonna be a while before the aluminum casts are done.
