Need Help w/ Pricing a Low Mileage '88 325iC

Postby WildKarrde » Mon Mar 10, 2014 5:12 pm

Trying to help out an acquaintance in buying his first E30. He hasn't seen the car yet, all he has are these two pics, the owner is on vacation, but he will be meeting him once he gets back. It's a 5-speed, with 70,000 miles, assuming the odometer works. He hasn't seen any maintenance records yet. I told him some of the primary things to look out for... the only thing that concerns me is that the owner was asking 7,800, and he talked him down to 6,500.

I know more info is needed, but I'm not real familiar with what convertibles go for. I haven't seen many go for that much, especially with diving boards. I can recall a pristine '94 325i that had an asking price of about $7000. This one doesn't seem to be anything special, but assuming it's running great, with a cold a/c and no rust, are metal bumper, stock 325iC's really worth this much? Maybe they're rarer in Maine, I dunno.

I mean... it looks well taken care of enough to be worth that much. OR, you can talk me down in price and have my S52 E30 for less :)

Just seems a tad high to me.... I'm not a fan of metal bumpers and bottlecaps though. If I were spending $6500 on an E30 it needs at least plastic or euro bumpers.

If you really wanna get rid of your S52 E30 though... I have a nice 325e I might be willing to trade. ;)

If you have a for sale link I'll forward it to him though.

I see Maine plates on it... How long has it been there? After buying a Suburban from Maine I'd be willing to bet there's a metric shitload of rust hidden in that e30. Make sure you check it thoroughly.

Agreed. And when I mean check start knocking on fenders, see if you can look underneath it somehow. I've brought a jack and jack stands to view cars before and only had one person get offended and I ended not buying it :P Check everything and go with him if you can, if anything I like to look at E30's and it's easy enough to remember the spots to check.

Well, checking the car with him would be an impossibility, as I'm nowhere near Maine, lol.

I can't look at E30's, as they tend to be like puppies and the more I look the more I really, really want them. I have a great E30, but there's always something better, like Yoshi's S52 which I'd gladly kill a puppy to own, lol.

Verts tent to run higher than coups or sedans. If Tue car is rust free and in the condition I would expect from a 70k mile car, including a good condition working top, I could see it being worth $5500-6k.

Is that so? I've passed up on several verts in my area for $1500-$2000. True they all needed a little bit of work, but nothing really major. I could have had a flood car for $300 which I should have grabbed. I'm sure I could have made a few bucks off of whatever wasn't water damaged.

The clean functioning top is what gives a vert the value since most are ratted out and won't open/close correctly.

If that's the case I'm jumping on the next one I see. I know a local guy that specializes in convertible tops and he's dirt cheap since he works out of his house.

So, the timing belt on this car was last changed in '05. The potential buyer is going to be driving the car at least a couple hundred miles back home. My gut reaction tells me to stress to him the seriousness of a 9 year old timing belt... even if it only has a few thousand miles on it. Am I over reacting, or should I message him ASAP? The oldest belt I've ever had was 5 years old... and it could have probably made it another year had I let it... but 9 years seems a bit extreme to me. On the same token, I don't want to make him un-necessarily paranoid about the belt and engine.

I guess it's also worth nothing that the actual mileage on the car is 90,000, not 70,000. I've seen some pics of the interior though, and it's immaculate.
