325is or 325 Touring! Which would you prefer?

Postby Ryki » Wed Nov 19, 2014 8:06 am

So, my wife suggested that I could grab a 325 touring while I had the chance here in Germany. As I already have a 325is in addition to my M3, I'll have to choose is or touring. If you had to choose, would you keep a clean is or take the time to find a just as clean touring?

I won't be able to do any racing/tracking/anything for the next years to come due to the language barrier. I'll definitely take the time to visit tracks as I can but getting into a league isn't an option. The car will end up being 99% DD and 1% track trips.

Thanks for any input/votes, I certainly appreciate it : )

DO WANT!!!

I really love my IS, but I've always wanted a touring. Even more so since you can't really find them around here.

How difficult would y'all say it would be to extend the front half shafts to prevent any damage to the AWD system?

I voted for the 'is' and I'll tell you why. In my opinion the e30 chassis embodies what a small sport coupe should be, light, nimble, fun to drive. The wagon is none of those. If they were imported like the rest of the models they would be desired as much as the m10 318s over here, but since they are a scarce breed in the states everyone wants one. Is an AWD touring cool, yeah sure, but realistically there are far better AWD wagons available for the same price. The AWD system in the e30 is okay, but not great. Browse the Audi forums and see how many people even feel the need to test the AWD when they buy a new (used) one let alone plan on re-engineering the drive shaft to hold up to moderate abuse, not many. The e30 Tourings lose the essence of what the e30 was intended to be IMO. The IX touring in particular isn't even good for 'stancing' or building for the low mean style since the half shafts don't like being lowered much. What they are good for? Restoring 100% factory, NOT driving in salt, and taking to concourse shows because they are pretty rare and a neat car. All just my $.02.

Option 4: Buy touring; ship Blasphemy101 your iS!

Keep in mind, a the iX touring is going to be one of the slowest E30s you can buy and everything Tony said rings true in a lot of ways. BUT to counter some of his points -

1) The iX system seems pretty good. Any car 25 yr. old car has issues, they just happen to occur with the AWD system in iX's. I'm sure those Audis have plenty of issues in areas the typically reliable E30 excels. It also sounds like there is a known solution for the weak driveshaft, and you seem pretty handy. No idea on the level of difficulty. At the worst, you could probably have a machine shop take care of it, and never have to worry about it again.

2) The bottom line is the touring WASN'T imported the way M10 318s were. Since you're living in Germany, this is the most practical chance you will get to own an iX or a Touring; in this case, you can do both at once.

3) Since you have an M3, you already have the most 'fun to drive' out of the box E30. To me it makes sense to have something nice and practical to drive all the time. An iX Touring is probably the most practical E30 you can find.

Even if the tourings were the most common e30 in the US I would still want one. I've always been a lover of wagons. True they're not as sporty as a coupe, and they're slower and heavier, but I wouldn't get one for racing. Unless you count dB drag racing. I would have the loudest system on the east coast if I had a wagon of any type. That would be fun to drive for a whole different reason.

I really do love this forum. It's not only that there's some good and sometimes opposing viewpoints but that y'all take the time to write it out. I can't say how much I appreciate it!

Good news is that I won't be getting rid of the M3 or the 325is. It so happens that my mom needs a car due to some life situations so she'll be considering it hers until I get home and repaying me by taking care of it and my Javelin.

More good news? lol! I may be getting a few touring >.> It's a 318 but I'm also getting a free M30 in a similar time frame over the next month or two. If it doesn't happen then oh wells, I'll probably be searching for a 325ixt for my DD, doing all my maintenance plans and taking the time to get some extended half shafts because they're apparently available in Germany. Having a touring will be nice as my wife isn't terribly happy with the interior quality or space in her freE36. It's also that while my WRX is fast, I miss my E30 and truly enjoy the M3 every time I drive it.

It's nice to think that I have the capability to keep a unique and completely original muscle car, 1970 AMC Javelin SST, as well as a 88 M3, 89 325is and a touring? I mean I have the best of every world; the collector, the track car, the family vehicle, and the muscle car. Thanks for the well written thoughts y'all, it's appreciate : )
