How Many BMW's Have You Owned?

Postby WildKarrde » Sat Jul 09, 2016 10:57 pm

I imagine the members here have had a pretty interesting collection of classic BMW's over the years! I just thought it would be cool to brag about what car's we've had, and I don't think this forum has a thread for this yet, so here it goes!

1987 BMW 325e Coupe
My first BMW. Wanted an i, but couldn't find one, and didn't want a 4 cylinder, so this is what I finally settled on. I bought it primarily for commuting in my outside sales job, but the brake master cylinder died in heavy traffic soon after I got it. Fixed that, and about 8 months later it was involved in an insurance scam on the last leg home from a 4500 mile road trip. A couple people went to jail, but I lost my car, was pretty pissed.

1989 BMW 325is Coupe
Got this car a little while after the last one got killed, and absolutely loved it. Red, with black leather Ricaro interior. Strong engine, smooth transmission, it was a dream to own. Got rear ended at high speed after a couple years, flew off into the ditch, and was totaled beyond repair.

1989 BMW 325iX Coupe
This car had been turbocharged by the previous owner. It was a seriously cheap turbo build, but a LOT of fun to drive. The AWD system worked, surprisingly, and this was the car I owned while in the Air Force. Absolutely loved driving it hard on the dirt and gravel back roads of Texas. The car had a cheap John Deere flat black paint job, but got TONS of compliments while driving around base. While the car had never left me stranded, it took constant tinkering to keep it driveable. After about a year and a half, I had to sell it because 9 MPG is pretty damn expensive. I took a shameful sabbatical from BMW's for almost a year after this, and tinkered with classic Mercedes turbodiesels.

1988 BMW 325iC Convertible
Did a lot of trades and bartering on this project. The chassis has just over 60,000 miles on it, with a Zender body kit from the factory, and a gorgeous custom interior. No engine, and missing the auto transmission it came with. Eventually it will have the engine and transmission from my '89 325is, but the project has had very little progress the last couple years. I'm hoping to get some serious work done on it after I finish my degree in December.

1987 BMW 535i
After being thoroughly fed up with Mercedes diesels, and trying to track down air leaks in their hundreds of miles worth of vacuum hoses, I traded an '85 Mercedes 300TD Wagon for this car. The 535i needed a ton of work... but so did the 300TD. I kept the car for about 8 months, but my work load at school was getting heavier and heavier, so I decided to trade it towards something more reliable.

1987 BMW 325 Sedan
This is the car I traded the 535i for, and it has been my daily driver for the last 3.5 years. It's been a great car. A few mods have given it pretty good acceleration, and it yields about 25-26 MPG in mixed, fairly aggressive driving. I've put a couple thousand into maintaining it over the time I've owned it, but let some things slide due to financial and time constraints. Although the car is still in decent mechanical shape, it needs about $1500 worth of work done now to make it excellent again, including some body and paint work I'd like to do to it. I decided to take it off the road until that work is done. When it returns to the road, it will be fully insured under collectors insurance, as sadly it seems impossible to get "agreed value" coverage on a classic daily driver.

1988 BMW M5
Ok, I didn't actually own this car, but I've put over 2000 miles on it over the two times it's been loaned to me. I had it for the entire month of June this year, and it felt like my car during that time. It's absolutely the best car I've ever had the opportunity to spend significant time with. I was ready to sell all my possessions, and maybe a kidney to buy it by the time I was done with it, but sadly my possessions aren't worth that much, and I probably drink a bit too much to get a decent price for my kidney, lol. I saw an eBay ad with a fairly nice E28 M5 for sale, and the owner claimed to have only driven it 1000 miles in the 9 years he owned it. If true, that's such a sad story, these cars deserve to be enjoyed on a twisty road. That said though, it made me feel all the more appreciative of the unique opportunity I had with this car.

1990 BMW 735i
My most recent acquisition, this car is the reason I had an M5 for a month as a loaner, so I'm eternally grateful for that, lol. I had never aspired to 7-series ownership, but about the time I found that my 325 had a few parts nearing the end of their serviceable lifetime, I found out this car was available for $2000. It needed some work, but the owner had agreed to replace what was necessary before selling it to me. It turned out to be a little more than he expected, but in the end I got a really fantastic car. The M30B35 engine is absolutely to die for, and this is one of the smoothest cars I've ever owned. I bought it to have a cheap daily driver, but I'm really wanting to convert the auto to a manual transmission... and if I do that I might as well cosmetically restore it, so I'm not sure if it will remain my cheap daily driver. If I decide not to restore it, or it gets wrecked, I'll likely transplant the M30B35 into either an E24 or E28 chassis eventually. The car is nice, but the engine is the main reason I bought it. The chassis is accident and rust free though, so I'm leaning towards a full restoration in a couple years.

90 318i - sold it because I wanted an m20.
87 325e - sold it because eta.
90 325is - been parked since 2012 because kids.

Have a w202 c230 as a DD now, but in the next year or so I would like to get into a newer 5 series. the c230 is too small with two car seats and a stroller, though the 30mpg is nice.

How's that X3? I feel like it's either solid or barely holding together. There is no in between.

Pretty solid for a DD, but maintenance has been done as per BMW Old School Maintenance recommendations. As a matter of fact, it's time to do the 100k maintenance

The guy I go the 735i from had a fantastic, fully loaded 6-speed X3 a while back. I'm not much of an SUV fan, but wouldn't have minded rolling in that one.

6 speed manual, or 6 speed boring?

I towed an X3 today. Had like 2000 miles on it and the engine was toast. It's a rental, so I'm sure there's no warranty coverage on it. Oil all over the engine bay.

Speaking of rolling over, while I had the X3 on my flatbed I wheel lifted a Ford Transit van that got flipped over and rolled twice by a Lamborghini! I got pics of the Transit, but I have no idea where the Lambo went.

Hah. My current 1990 735i is the newest car I've owned in 10 years... I forgot BMW automatic transmissions are getting up to 8 gears now.

The X3 had a 6-speed manual.

Re: How Many BMW's Have You Owned?

Postby 87e30 » Fri Aug 05, 2016 11:43 pm

I've owned 6 BMWs so far. My very first car back in my senior year of high school was a 1980 320i. I nicknamed that thing the flintstonemobile after my foot went through the floor in the hills of Virginia. I traded it in for a brand new telephone pole the second time I ever drove in snow.

Fast forward to whenever I signed up on this site, my first e30 was the white 87 325is I daily drove (with a few downtime exceptions) until about a year ago when I got my current DD on the road. Also both rockers on the front cylinder broke in half, and I may have burnt some rings running a very out of balance 5 cylinder up to redline when the Corvette next to me pissed me off too much. I was gonna fix it, but the rust on the body is worse than I thought. Drivers side rear spring is gonna fly up into the trunk if that car goes over a big enough bump.

My next e30 is a beige 4 door 85 318i with 72,000 miles. Garage kept for about 25 years, so there's virtually no rust on it. I bought it from the second owner who crashed it into a Porsche. It runs fine (but needs radiator, radiator support, fender, and hood), but it's an automatic. All of my other BMW's have been manual.

Next e30 is my 87 325e that I bought as a parts car. I literally saved it from getting crushed. I chased the tow truck down on my way to work one morning and told him I'll give him whatever scrap was gonna give him if he dropped it. He said it sat in some girls back yard for over 2 years, and he tried to get it running for 2 weeks before giving up. I used several parts to get my current DD running, but I have a feeling the only problem with it was the fried ECU. Well, that, and the fact that it looks like someone pried the trunk open with a crowbar or something. I still might do something with that car if I ever have the time and money. LS1 swap maybe?

Next e30 is my current DD. Arctic blue 4 door 86 325e. I bought it from the original owner after it sat at the same repair shop for at least 2.5 years. Every time I was in the area I asked the shop owner if the guy was ready to sell it yet. After about a year and a half of bugging him he called me out of the blue and said the owner just dropped off the title. I picked it up an hour later. From what I've been able to find out it's a pretty rare color with blue interior and factory installed rear headrests. It also has a cassette holder in the center console. I haven't the slightest clue how it works though lol.

Last e30 (as of now) is the replacement for my white 87 325is. It's a black 87 325is. Saw it in a gas station around the corner from where I was towing a car one day, so after I dropped the car I figured I'd stop by and ask about it. It belonged to an ex-employee of the station's repair shop. Originally they told me the STARTER died while he was on the highway, but later I was told it was the fuel pump. So the guy was stuck on the highway and called his girlfriend for help. She came to the rescue in her e36 with an extension cord! They tied the extension cord from somewhere on her e36 to the lift eye on the front of the poor m20b25 engine in the e30. Not sure how far they got before the timing cover, and everything in front of it, got ripped out from under the hood. So when I get the time to work on that one I'll need to fish out some broken bolts, replace a bunch of belts/wires/hoses and radiator, probably swap out timing belt and water pump for good measure, and move over all my modifications from my white car.

why the hell would you tow from the engine lift point? Did he not know there is a tow hook? I'd pull the whole front of that engine off and look for bits.

Maybe for the same reason that he said his STARTER died on the highway. I didn't ask questions, I just bought the thing for 1/3 of what he put it on CL for.
