Really? Your first BMW was an E30 M3? Everything else is just downhill from there, lol.

Man, one of my first DREAM cars was the e30 M3. I first saw one at the dealership a friend worked at when I had my e21. I took one look at those fenders and fell in love! My friend gave me the mirrored plexiglass ///3 front license plate thingy off of the car. I may still have that in storage somewhere. Some day I hope to own the car. Until then I can just play make believe with my 325's. lol

I've driven an e30 M3, and to be honest I wasn't all that impressed. Granted, I drove it on the street, not on track which is really where it would shine. For street driving the 325is is much more responsive and fun, the M3 didn't really start to make any torque until around 5k so with the exception of on-ramps you couldn't really get it into it's comfort zone on the road. I'd love to get to drive one on track just to compare. My buddy has an M3 and a race prepped 318 with an s50. His track car was down for a lapping day so he took the m3 and I asked him how it felt. His response was "soft and slow", lol. People tend to forget the production M3's were still detuned both in power and suspension, they really are not "race cars". The interior is nearly identical to my 325is, from inside the car, other than the dogleg trans, it was pretty much the same feel as the 325is. Don't get me wrong, they are awesome cars, but considering their value now, and the fact they aren't all that much fun on the street, I'd rather own a stock 325is than a stock M3 as a car I actually plan to drive and enjoy. If I as rich and wanted a collector item to stash away and only drive to meets, sure, M3 all the way.

I get what you're saying, but for me it's all about those sexy ass flared fenders! I love driving my 325is, but I don't like looking at it as much as I would if it had those fenders. lol

That's why my dream was to find a rolling chassis E30 M3 and stick an S52 in it. Sadly... they're too valuable to do that to anymore.

I helped do an E30 M3 with an S54. It was annoying but arguably a more impressive motor swap. I've decided I don't care about the M3 anymore. I want to do a full resto to some car. But the parts for the M3 are just too expensive. Datsun 280 sounds better to me.

e30m3 parts have been stupid expensive long before the car themselves were worth a fortune. 15 years ago there where people swapping out s14s because the car wasn't worth the 15k+ to rebuild the engine.

$15,000 just for a rebuild?!? I can get a freshly rebuilt one installed AND wide body kit and m3 trunk (with correct pillar) installed onto a 325i/is for less than that!

Yep. S14s only came in the M3 and it shares very few parts with other motors. It wasn't a super high selling car like the E36 M3. Even then the E36 M3's engine shares a fook ton of parts with the non M. More so if you're in the US. But that's a bitch fest for another time.

Economically, it's not worth rebuilding the S14 unless you want to fully restore it. But at that point, I wouldn't drive it for fear of breaking it. Why bother at that point?

Maybe fear of breaking it is the reason the owner of the e30 M3 I towed only drove it 140 miles in the past 10 years.

I ran the E30 M3 at Blackhawk farms in stock form with R comps a couple of times.
It is the only unmolested car that I actually enjoyed on the track.
I spun a rod bearing and rebuilt the engine Except Lifter buckets for $4800, iirc..
I didn't feel too keen about another rebuild, so I tossed an S52US conversion in it, plus a TMS J-stock kit.... The engine swap Ruined the soul of the car.
I'll be converting it back to stock probably.
It is the only car I own that I can get into and enjoy after getting out of a 1330 pound Lotus 7 clone.
I never found the s14 to be sluggish, or the car to be a poor DD. The problem is getting body parts and the expensive Engine parts. I recently got a rear tail light panel after BMW decided to stamp a batch of them. I had been persistent and waiting for that part for 8 years.

I hated the E36M3...Too heavy and under-braked,(Hawk HT10 at all four corners). It would run out of brakes in 4 laps. If I encountered a slower car, the brakes would fade sooner.

The e30 325iS has a similar "personality" to the E30 M3. I really like the lightness of the E30 Chassis. But the rust...

I know a couple people who own "survivor" M3's that drive them very little for that exact reason (fear of engine repairs). It's sad really, a car that was designed to be driven hard isn't driven at all because if something breaks it's too expensive to fix...The relative low cost of non-M e30s (back in the day) both initial investment and operational costs is what brought me into the scene in the first place. Considering a 325i can out perform a stock e30M3 with not much investment there isn't a lot of ROI on owning an M3 other than stashing clean ones away and NOT driving them.

How long ago did you rebuild a s14 for $4800?? And secondly, why have we not met?? You bring such machines to my home track, I must have seen you if it was in the last 5-6 years.

I haven't been on the track for 8 years.
I did the Road America octoberfest in 2008, with Badger Bimmers. That may have been the last time I was on track.
Seems like the car always needs some upgrade to be track worthy.
2008-2009 was the time of the s14 rebuild.
Now, I'm currently buying the lifters, I neglected to replace.. $32 apiece.
Also re sealing an M20 for the winter beater, and rebuilding a Ford Zetec .
No monies for track this year.
