Black 87 325 part out

Postby 87e30 » Tue May 20, 2014 11:51 pm

I will post some pictures whenever my phone decides it wants to allow me to e-mail them to myself. Black 87 coupe e motor 5 speed cloth houndstooth or whatever interior, manual sunroof, yada yada yada. Cluster reads 220something thousand miles. Not sure condition of engine, I just know it sat for at least 2 years in someones back yard. I really don't want to ship anything, but toss me offers on anything you'd be interested in and we'll see what happens. Factory specs below.

Here's the only pic I could get from my phone so far. Don't have batteries for my cameras right now. Saw the car on the back of a flatbed on my way to work yesterday morning and chased the guy down. He was on his way to the scrap yard to dump it because nobody bought it from him after having it in his back yard for 3 weeks. So I gave him what the scrap yard would have given him, and picked it up in the afternoon on my own flatbed.

Parts I need for myself include transmission, both front fenders, possibly hood, radiator support, bumpers with trim, fuse box cover, blower motor, maybe sunroof, and lots of sheet metal from the body to fix the rust holes in my white one. Pretty much everything else is up for grabs.

Would greatly prefer if someone came to get the stuff, as I really don't have time to get to the post office, but like I said, throw me your offers on what you want and we'll see what happens.

Ooh, I need all of the trim pieces around the windows, and also the drivers door.

Stared around... couldn't find. Follow the AC lines into the cabin. where the AC lines meat the core box, I need the plastic cover.

part number 6. Without it, if you turn your fan on, all the air just flies out the side of the heater core. So I've had a fleece (I got for xmas 10 years ago) stuffed in there. I'd like to start wearing that fleece.

You sure you wanna wear that after it's been wedged in there? Would I be right to assume that cover comes out after the dash is removed? I'll be sure to put that to the side when I start raping the car of all its parts. You should pick it up from me at Gfest :-D

I don't know a single person who doesn't need the fuse box cover. I do have 1 in mint condition, but I'm not gonna part with that. It's an "e" motor, so I'm pretty sure the AFM and TPS are different than the "i" motor. Which one do you have? Have you tried the drill and drain "fix" for your TPS? They get filled up with oil eventually and stop working right, but in many cases you can drill a small hole in the bottom to drain the oil out (a little brake cleaner helps a lot with that) and they will work again and shouldn't have the same problem.

All good on the fuse cover, ordered a fresh one last night.
My car is '87 325Is with balanced and built M20. The car is an original IMSA E30 that competed in the International Sedan Series.
On the TPS fix...is their any DIY on that or do I just drill a hole in it? I'm going to try this not like I can break what's already broken. Thanks for the heads up on TPS fix. I really appreciate that

I can't find the thread I read a few months back when I drilled mine, but there's several out there. I borrowed this image Image from a thread on bimmerforums (hopefully the link will work here) to show you what the inside of your TPS should look like. You COULD just crack yours open and clean it, then drill your drain hole before you close it back up. Or you can just look at his, and estimate where and how big you should drill (like I did). I read that a lot of people like to replace the micro switch when they open them (can get replacement at Radio Shit) instead of replacing the whole thing. Seems a MUCH cheaper option to me as long as you're handy with a soldering iron.

Why not fix the oil leak? Am I missing something?

Am I about to school Yoshi? From what I've read the TPS getting fouled up by oil leaking down into it is a very common problem with no real "fix". Here are a couple quotes from another board.

Oil in the intake is normal and there can be quite a bit on an engine with more than 100k. While not particularly good, oil going through the intake isn't harmful unless the volume is enough to cause fouling of the plugs. Placing a catch tank that incorporates an oil separator between the valve cover and intake will greatly reduce how much oil reaches the intake.

As hot oil vapor is drawn into the throttle body through the PCV system, some of it invariably wicks its way down past the throttle shaft and into the TPS below it. I imagine that this happens mostly after shut-down. It is a gradual process because, as stated earlier, that shaft is fairly tight unless its bearing surface is worn.

Eventually, the switch will become so fouled with oil that it ceases to make the correct contact when the throttle position returns to idle. The engine will then surge, much as if it has a vacuum leak. You will chase your tail looking for vacuum leaks until someone finally says "Hey, by any chance is your TPS full of oil?" . . . whereupon you learn about this trick which Jim taught to me.

lol I know... so... fix it. That much oil in the intake isn't normal. But on crack it is.

Other than putting in a non m20, how does one fix a problem with no solution? It's a gradual problem that can take 20 years to build up enough to notice anything wrong.
