Lets face it, E30s love going sideways.

rear tires

May be a dumb question but im wondering why dont you use just bottlecaps on the rear and shit old hard tires for drifting? Seems like putting wide rears is counter to what you want and just takes lots more power to get the same results...

I don't know if you have ever driven much in the snow, but the concept is the same. It is way easier to slide around with snow tires on (lots of grip) because when you want the rear tires to 'bite' and regain traction, it is way easier when they have lots of grip. Same with drifting, wide sticky rear tires make it much easier to control the rear end.

You want the stickiest tires you can still manage to drift with. Crap tiles will just cause you to drift slowly.

But the main reason not to use bottle caps is the terrible selection of tires. Stock tire size is around 195/65/14. That's HUGE sidewall. After a certain point of suspension work, the tires are flexing and not the suspension. Even then, on transitions, the car will shift but the tires won't. It causes a kind of "snap oversteer".

Basically, for drifting, you want the smallest sidewall possible and the best tires you can still drift on.
