Automation Game - Building a Car From the Ground Up!

Postby WildKarrde » Wed Dec 18, 2013 3:43 am

Hello all. Some of you have probably already seen this over at e30tech, but figured I'd try to drum up some conversation over here as well. Automation is still in rough draft form, and has been for a long time, but they have come a long way since I first learned of them. They now have a rough draft of the system to build chassis, mold bodywork, and put the car together in a final product. It's still far from complete, but pretty cool what you can do with it none the less. I made a video of myself designing a small turbocharged V8 coupe with over 400HP from a 2.8L engine. Fun times.

The link to the game is here:

Looks pretty neat, but $25 for an incomplete program seems excessive.

Looked through that video a bit last night, I could have a lot of fun just designing cars with something like that.

Yeah, the graphics look terrible, but I could easily see myself wasting away at the computer with that haha. I'll probably give it a whirl.

I bought the $35 version when all you could build were naturally aspirated I4's and V8's, lol. I've had a lot of fun with it, and it's been cool to see the game evolve from a very limited I4 demo to what it is now. The game got greenlit on Steam sometime in August, so you should be able to buy it through there if you're uneasy giving your credit card info to a mostly unknown developer.

You can also get a free engine builder demo from the site to check out before paying.

I know absolutely nothing when it comes to stuff like this, so here comes a more than likely very stupid question: is this something that after you buy it you get updates every time they come out, or do you have to pay for add ons and such?

Do you mean you know nothing about how early release/crowdfunded games work, or nothing about designing cars?

As for early release/crowd funded games, it depends on the developers. In the case of Automation, if you buy the $35 version you get everything the game has to offer. If you buy the $25 version, I think V16 engines are all you won't get in the game. Before the game is released you get updates for free as they come. After the game is released, I'm pretty sure all new features will be available to all paying customers for free through patch... but don't quote me on that. I'm sure the information is available on their forums but I don't have time to look for it right now.

As for not knowing about how to design a car... I knew less than I thought, lol. They have great tutorials for the engine builder, and I've learned so much about engines from the game it's worth it to me in itself. I think it takes a bit of a car geek to enjoy this game... it's quite realistic, and even though they have great tutorials they don't hold your hand at all... making a good car is all in your hands.

Haha, yeah I meant games like that. I'm definitely planning on buying it. I'd like to consider myself a car geek, and I'm pretty sure this'll keep me busy for hours!

That's an option I'm quite certain will never be available in the game.

I think I've heard tell that they would like to create a way to export car models to some racing games... but that's probably a pipe dream.

So I just got my key and I'm working on getting to the game. Threw me for a loop because I didn't realize it's all run through the forum. I put you in as the guy who referred me, so hopefully you'll get something out of it. Hopefully soon I'll figure out how to play haha

I dunno if they have a referral program, but thanks. It's currently run through the forum, but they were recently greenlit by Steam so you will have the option to turn your forum key into a Steam key, which I plan to do. Dunno what the eta is on that.

Welp, wasted $35 haha. Apparently my Fiancé's laptop is a pos and can't play it. I need to buy a laptop, so now it's time to find the cheapest one that can handle this game.

That sucks, even my Atom 2 tablet can run it... barely. (Though I wouldnt recommend it.) I'd think nearly any i3 or above could run the game on minimum settings. Good luck finding a new PC though, too bad you missed out on all the cyber monday stuff.
