Tony's new Vinyl cutting adventure

Postby M20_fever » Tue May 26, 2015 1:48 pm

I've had a lot of long nights since the baby was born (oh yeah, I had another baby) and I found myself surfing ebay a lot (bad idea). Pulled the trigger on a whole vinyl cutting start up kit. Should be arriving in the next week, pretty stoked. I'll have capabilities of doing vinyls up to 30" wide, infinite length. I'll finally be able to make the hood decal I had designed for the e30, and do some other cool lettering for the car I've always wanted but didn't want to pay for one-offs. I'll post some pics when everything gets here. Might take a few weeks to get everything dialed in, but I'll be offering custom vinyls to forum members soon, including design work if needed. With 30" capabilities I can do full race car liveries, window decals, pretty much anything a commercial sign shop can do.

This thread will be my repository for progress, and examples of what I learn to do with the machine. I bought a bit more functionality than I need now, so I can expand as time goes on, into heat transfers for shirts and such. Sky is the limit really, pretty excited.

From what I hear, the process isn't bad. It's the transferring that is a nightmare for anything with intricate detail.

Very interested in your progress. How much did the kit run you?

yeah weeding is the hard part, but it just takes patience. It was like $660 all in, I ordered some clear transfer tape for multilayer designing which added the extra.

This is the kit I got:http://www.ebay.com/itm/300879724537?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

yeah, but with the stuff Corben sent me I only need a few items for the turbo. Rebuilding what he sent me and installing the MS will give me enough time to recoup the cost of the vinyl machine and hopefully provide me with some income to roll into the toys since daycare and student loans are eating most of my fun money at the moment.

Absolutely man, it would be cool to make something for your car for a change, lol. I'm going to strip the numbers off my car and make some DTM Dekra style numbers for it, but we can do whatever you want for Icy, get creative. Going to be making LOTS of race car livery items for my car, it's going to be my practice canvas.

well, day two of having my new cutter setup. It took me a few hours to get everything working properly after assembling the machine, but I was cutting vinyl that night.

first decal, just a quickie for my Son's new bedroom.

This was my first attempt at a multi-layer graphic. My buddy wanted a name for his utility cart (it already had the name), so I designed this:

I'm in the process of making some additional decals for this cart, I'll throw up the pics when I finish them up.

So far I'm loving it! Still lots to learn in the design software, but I think I'm off to a decent start. I'll be making a name decal for my boat next, then I may be brave enough to try and make the hood logo for the e30 I've wanted for a couple years. It's a bit more complicated and large though, so I want to make sure I'm confident in my skills first.

Matt, I'll PM you on FB.

Thanks Yosh, that's just scratching the surface of what can be done but so far I'm really happy with my progress.

Been practicing more.

Some more decals for my buddies utility cart. Took a few pics of the weeding and layering process.

my first 3 layer, making a logo and name for my boat.

I'm getting more comfortable with the design software, so after I finish my boat I may try importing the hood logo for the e30 and messing around with it. It's pretty big so getting everything layered and applied right is going to be a challenge.
