Just my luck...

Postby M20_fever » Tue Oct 27, 2015 8:28 pm

So I haven't posted much lately, but I made some big moves in the vehicle department. I sold both my VWs (yay!) and bought the Wife a 2006 Expedition Eddie Bauer. Even the Passat was too small for two kids and their associated crap. The Expy is super nice, fully loaded and only had 77k on the clock.

Well, last week, after getting it back from my body man (got all the blemishes fixed, hood/rear hatch repainted) it threw the damn passenger side timing chain through the valve cover... -omg- . So right now I'm balls deep in replacing the entire timing system on a 77k motor. I'm a Ford truck guy and love my Superduty, but damn, after doing my research the 5.4 3v V8 in the Expy is just a pile of shit.

I'll post some pics later, but essentially after tearing the entire engine down I found the chain guides on both sides disintegrated, both hydraulic tensioners had blown seals, and the chains were stretched to hell. So $700 later I have all the new parts and I'm starting assembly.

I should note, I bought the truck with an SRS light on for retarded cam timing on bank 1 (pass side), but figured it was a cam sensor which is common on these things. So before it threw the chain I replaced both cam sensors, the VVT solenoids, plugs (whole other mess), and an airbag impact sensor.

Good news is this truck will basically be new when I'm done, but geeze. On the plus side, I haven't even been mad working on it because I keep telling myself "it's still better than working on a VW", lol.

Is there anything NOT better than working on a VW? I'm not hating on them, but they do everything different than everyone else. You need a whole separate toolbox full of stuff to work on them.

meh, still better than the POS 5.3 in my Dads Silvarado. Before it shit the bed it was getting around 16-18mpg, not all that bad for heavy ass 4wd. It's just a bloated f150 for the most part.

On a related note, the trans started crapping out in the Superduty on my way home yesterday. Yay!

I don't remember how many MPG I used to get in my 93 Exploder. Got 8MPG in my 99 'Burb though. 14 highway on a GOOD day, but I mostly drove it local doing deliveries.

Got an appointment Tuesday to get the trans in the pickup rebuilt/upgraded with a HD billet converter, another $1500 out the door. That means I HAVE to get the Expedition done this weekend.

yeah, it also makes you shit your pants.

The weather doesn't look like its going to cooperate with my plans this weekend, plus it's Halloween so I've got kid commitments for most of Saturday...I'll see how far I can get in reassembly but I doubt I'll have it running by Sunday. I've arranged to borrow my Dads Jag for a few days until I get the truck back.

so true! Saturday I should be buttoning up the Expedition, and the F250 should be back from the trans shop Tuesday. On the plus side, I borrowed my Moms Mitsubishi Spyder and rolled into work top down like a boss, lol.

I try not to say topless in the same sentence as "my mom".

Expedition is back together and running great. It's 20 hours and $1k I'll never get back, but it's done. Truck should be home with a new built trans by midweek. Now I can focus on pulling my boat and winterizing it...
