Re: I want to kick this cold weather in the fayse! (engine problems)

Postby 87e30 » Wed Jan 25, 2017 12:49 am

Past few days haven't really been cold. I put the temp control all the way to the cold side to see what happens. Leaving top and middle vents off, but bottom open fully. When the car gets up to normal operating temp I notice a slight fog come from under the dash. If I open the middle vents the fog will come from them too.

As much of a pain in the ass replacing the heater core might be, I'd rather it be that then more engine problems.

As far as that clutch issue... It's only happened a few times. I don't think my clutch is actually bad. If I come off it quick and/or get on the gas it holds just like it should. I've driven a couple cars with slipping clutches and it doesn't feel anything like those. I know my flex disc is shot. Is it possible that's what's causing this weird feeling once in a while? Could it be something inside the actual transmission?

Those plug in defroster suck ass, I tried them when the core got clogged on my B5 Passat. I had two of them running and it still didn't work for shit.

Funny my boss recommended the same thing to me this morning. Guess I need to shop around for a good price on a core.

Is there any way brake fluid could be leaking into the clutch making it slip like that? Yesterday my brake light started coming on while driving to work, so I checked and the fluid was low. I don't ever see any wet spots where I park, but the fluid has to be going somewhere. The way the slip feels I think it could definitely be brake fluid causing it. Am I gonna need to take out the tranny? I no longer have access to a lift. :-(

The clutch master is fed off the brake master, so yes if the seal on the clutch master rod goes bad it can leak into the bell housing. Depending on how bad the leak is and how much you've driven it the clutch might be fubar, but you can swap in a new clutch master and cross your fingers.

I've also seen clutch slaves leak into the bellhousing. I think you meant slave not master tony. But both could be leaking in this situation.

Great, more crap to fix. Had to do a clutch slave on my white e30 once when the pedal stayed on the floor after starting the car. I remember it was a pain in the ass to bleed with a helper. Now I gotta figure out how to do it solo.

Look on my youtube. I have a one man bleed demo. You just don't close the bleeder. Put a clear hose on it and pump slowly. Easy! Slaves are SUPER easy to do on M20s.

I usually just open the bleeder and let it gravity bleed for an hour, then standard bleed procedure and it's fine.

I did one night where I cracked all the bleeders, filled the res, and went to bed. Nothing came out the next day until I started pumping. I don't get why.

really? When I do it I just crack the slave bleeder and take the cap off the master. I had to refill it a couple times in an hour to keep the level above the rear brake pickup slots.

Maybe that's another symptom of the bad ABS unit or prop valve on my car. *shrugs*
