 who owns/drives a 5 series?
I'm curious as to the reliability of a used 5er, e34 or e39 mostly. I may be getting a job next week and will be looking for a good commuter for my 3 hours a day I'll spend driving. Do 5 series get decent MPG? Any info would be great.

e28 528es get good mileage. I think 5 series are heavy and inherently get bad gas economy.

 Re: who owns/drives a 5 series?
yeah, I thought about an e28 but I'm not looking to get another "project car" so I steering away from anything that old. I would be happy with 25MPG highway, will an e34 or e39 manage that?
Was also wondering what "standard" issues these cars are known for?

lol, when the time comes I will likely buy certified pre-owned so I get a warranty, I have enough projects to keep me busy until I die.

Never too many projects, just too little time.

If you are going to by an E34 ,, just focus on one car
525 M50B25 non vanos 91-92 the engine is one of the strongest engine EVER biuldt by BMW,, internal stuff is bullitproof,,
5 speed manual ,, not an automatic-transmission

 Re: who owns/drives a 5 series?
So what was decision here. I found a guy that was a e34 that I might be able to get to trade with me. Its a 525i auto with 140k on the motor and 100k on the tranny which is fine cause it would be for jess.... What do you all think?

 Re: who owns/drives a 5 series?
Sounds decent, I would not touch any 5 series from a private owner without service records.

 Re: who owns/drives a 5 series?
Why is that???? I guess its got a new trans and its really only for jess to go back and forth to work which is about 5 miles there and back.

 Re: who owns/drives a 5 series?
because starting with the e34 they are a pretty complex car, and if they are not properly maintained they can be a huge money pit (from what I hear). For example, why did the trans on that car go out at 100k? My guess would be because the original trans was never flushed or maintained like the dealer recommends in it's entire 100k life, and if the trans was not maintained, then the rest of the car was probably not either.

 Re: who owns/drives a 5 series?
I know that you have to take it for what it is, but the guy that has it now said that it that stuff was all changed by a good friend of his more as preventative maintaince to something that had to be done. He actually bought the car from his friend so yeah. I will be able to see what its like later, but either way I'll probably still trade for it. I'd rather put money into a rust free bimmer than a POS civic.... I don't know!
