Blackhawk Farms Raceway 4_16_2011 HSAX driver school

Postby M20_fever » Thu Apr 21, 2011 12:14 am

Had a blast, and got a crash course in advanced car control due to the conditions. It was raining in the morning, then snowing in the afternoon. My first two outings ended in the grass, 1st with a straight run-off going into turn 3 too hot, and 2nd was a 360 into the inside of turn 1 from down shifting without rev matching which locked the rear wheels due to the wet/snowy track. Over my next 20 or so laps I consistently stayed on track and cut my times down ending the day with best lap of 2:06 which is not bad considering my best lap last year in perfect conditions was 1:36.

The class is setup so each driver is assigned an instructor that rides with them all day, except the last timed run of the day. I got lucky and got paired not only with an instructor who has raced BMWs since the late '80s, starting in e30 M3s, moving to e36M3s, and now e46M3s, but he is also a professional driving coach. He makes his living teaching professional race drivers how to go faster. :D Needless to say he gave me some great tips and advice which resulted in a marked improvement throughout the day. I really hope I get him again for the school in June in better conditions.

Looking forward to the first points race event 5/30, and hoping the weather cooperates a little better.

Wow that looked like it was a blast! I love the rainy action shots. They look intense haha. Looks like the car is cornering very flat. Was it about the same with the springs before or have you noticed any inprovements with the new coils?

Car is much stiffer with the H&Rs, which actually made it harder to handle in the very cold/wet conditions. I can tell its going to be a lot faster through corners in the dry.

Lots of drift action Yosh, my instructor had me pushing the ragged edge of available traction which often resulted in some slip sliding. You would be sad to know I focused a lot on what actions to take to avoid that. ;)

Slip sliding away my friend! I can agree that the Race setup makes the car quite tail happy. Our first auto-x session was similar to your experience, only 40 degrees and no rain. I couldn't get any heat in the tires so it was or could have been a complete drift conituously around the track if I wanted to and that's with a little 318! With your m20, I can only imagine how easy it was to break the tires loose.

I like the Racing division Stickers! I'll post that one pic up I have.... sadly no one else has posted anything... :(

yeah, 1st 2nd and 3rd where pretty much useless, I just left it in 4th for almost the entire track shifting down to third coming out of turn 7 just to get some speed up for the front straight.
