Help me find some new tires

Postby M20_fever » Mon Aug 01, 2011 11:41 pm

I need to find some new tires, specs need to be 140 wear rating, 245/??/16 rear, 225/??/16 or maybe 235/??/16 front. I have a guy that can get me Goodyear, Toyo, or Yokahma, Michilen, or Pirelli. Maybe open to other brands, but I'd have to call and confirm he can source them.

So basically your looking at a ST autoX tire, correct? What will you be using it for? I have used Bridgestone RE-11's and really like them, other than that Dunlop Z1 star specs, Toyo R1R, Kumho Ecsta XS, Yokohama AD08, and Hankook RS3's are all good. Falken have the new Azenis RT-615K, but like the original 615 they are known to overheat and get greasy pretty quick when used hard. Check out this article by Grassroots Motorsports, they did a similar test a year ago as well with other tires.

I don't really know much about Michelin or Pirelli's offerings as they don't really offer anything decent for smaller sizes in an autoX type tire.

good list there. The Toyo's wont work, they don't offer a 245 in 16", I'll have to look into the others. I'll be using them exclusively on-track for HSAX events.

Gotcha. Didn't think to look into sizes to see if all of those would work width wise, my bad there. How wide are the wheels you will be using? 245 is a pretty meaty tire.

You're screwed for size availability in 16" for any of the sticky tires I was going to recommend, but Nsquared97 beat me to the same point.

Wheels are 8.5" wide. I need to sit down and check all those manufacturers to see what I can find. Someone has to offer a 245 in 16". I'm surprised Toyo doesn't since I'm running t1r in that size now.

I've had Goodyears, Yokohamas, Michellins, and Pirellis (as well as others you didn't mention) on my vehicles in the past. Out of those the only ones I would buy again for a car are Yokohama. There's 1 bend in Route 35 in Jersey where just about any tire will squeal if you're doing over 25 on dry ground. When I put Yokohamas on my car I could hit the turn at 45, even in the rain, and stick the whole way around. I wish I could remember what model they were.

For my trucks I usually buy BGFoodrich A/T's, but you weren't asking about trucks. lol

yep, all those are good tires. Problem is, no one seems to offer a good tire in 245x16" except the t1r's im currently running and they have a wear rating of 280, twice what I want to be running...

Just out of curiousity, why the staggered tire size?

because 245's fit in the rear but not the front. I wanted to run 235's up front, but with the T1r's I have the rear are 245/35, so I had to go with 215's up front to keep the same OD. If I can find 245/40 or 245/45 I can go to a 225 or 235 up front and still keep the same OD.

Wow, just looked at the sizes available for all the tires I listed that Tire Rack carries, and the biggest size for all of them is 225/50/16. Kumho was the one exception with a 265/45/16. IMO just getting a square set of 225/50/16's of any of these tires will still perform better than your current setup, although I would imagine you'll get a lot more oversteer with increasing front tire width while decreasing the rear tire width.

Yeah that's one of my biggest concerns. I'm really happy with the cars handling right now, so I would love to keep the same widths just in a stickier tire. If I had to go to different sizes I would like to go 235 all around, but even that size is impossible to find. It seems like tje available tires in the sizes I want go from wear ratings of 300+ to 40 and below, nothing at or just above 140...

T1R or bust. What do Porsche guys run? 245-width 16s are 80s 911 rear sizes, FYI. You may need to get something imported, like the Federal 595RS-R, or Bridgestone's european-only offerings.
