planning for next season...more grip, more power.

Postby M20_fever » Wed Aug 29, 2012 1:56 am

So, if all goes to plan I should be able to clinch the championship in my current class, and I'm considering moving up a class for next season. Once I get the BPP camber plates installed I'll be maxed out for points in CP, which is where I am now, so if I want to do any more modding I need to move up a class. Problem there is the guy who dominates the next class up is running 3-4 seconds faster than me consistently. My plan would be to throw some Hoosiers on it, and some beefy adjustable sways, and maybe a cam. You guys think that would make up the 4 seconds I need to be competitive? I was planning on a big cam, like a 288, maybe even a 303, since I'm eventually going to be installing the supercharger when I go to a race class. so, big ass cam, super sticky slicks, and beefy sway bars going to put me in the championship chase?

I would bet that some wide slicks will pick you up at least 2 secs, and more power will definitely help too. what size slicks, and what size tires are you running now? Same wheels or no?

Agreed on the race rubber as well. Tires make a ton of difference.

Remember you're bound by class rules. They keep you at specific times on purpose. There shouldn't be much cross talk between classes if things are done right. In which case, when you move up, tires tires tires. They make all the difference in the world. The Hoosiers should make your times drop like rocks.

current tire width is 245, but they run wide. Actual section width is a little over 10". I'm pretty much maxed pi it on width now, so rcomps would be same width.

how much HP you guys think a bill bill can like a 288 and ms3x could net? I'm guessing I'm around 180whp right now.

edit: will be running the k1s still.

300whp NA with just a cam? I doubt it. I was thinking the am would add around 30hp.

Are we talking for auto-x? With him being 3-4 sec faster, what are the average total times for a run? The auto-x here is usually 1:25-1:35 range, but I've been to some that its only :45-1:00. I would expect about 2-3 sec for a 1:30 lap on slicks. What tires do you have now? As for the cam, i always like to think low when estimating performance adders so you aren't disappointed. A cam alone and tuned I wouldn't expect any more than 30 for sure. Also, what's the next class up for you?

HSAX, so full track time attack. I'm 1st in my class (cp) running mid 1:29s. The guy that's 1st in the next class up (cm) is running mid 1:25s. I'm currently running Star Specs shaved to 5/32 245s all around.

Yoshi, I can't make the points work for the sc until I get to a race class...so it's going to be a while...

Cut those nicely flared arches off, get overfenders, and run ~265 Hoosiers if your rule set allows it; if the auto-x parking lot crowd can get them up to temp, you can certainly do so with your track excursions. That should be an automatic 2 second lap time drop on a course with times over 1min in length from a street tire. Cam + tune isn't going to get you to 200whp with a M20, sorry. Maybe low 190s judging from dyno sheet threads on other boards, but I see this as a waste of money unless you are rules-bound from doing any other power adders.

Don't bother with more suspension parts until the Hoosiers are on and you determine what will fit your driving style better.

my m20 stroker is a bit more aggressive than your run of the mill m20b25. ;-) It's probably in the ballpark of 200chp now.

I can't flair and go wider than I am now because I'll have to take points on the wider wheels.

Usually a good rule of thumb for autoX is that R-comps will gain you a second for every 30 seconds of course length, not really sure how that would correspond to a road course though. You mention the star specs run wide, but keep in mind R-comps do to, and usually even moreso. The question is, do you run Hoosier A6 or R6? A6 is the autoX compound, R6 for road racing. R6 will definitely last longer, but not quite as sticky/as quick to heat up. If your only doing one lap at a time, then I would imagine A6 would be your ticket.

Also take a look at the Hankook Z214, they are what I am running now. Not quite as good as the Hoosiers (although I have never seen any comparos to know how much of a difference), but they are way, way cheaper. 205/55/14 Hoosier A6~$220. Same size Hankook Z214 C71~$140. And the Hankooks have a soft (C71) and medium (C51) compound too.

Also check out this guy:

Sells race tires for dirt cheap. Give him a call though, you should be able to get way better deals than what they have listed. Buddy of mine got a set of 295/18's for less than $400, they were take-offs that literally ran only 2 laps at Road America.

That's great info, Thanks! I would be going with an autox compound since it's one lap from a standing start on cold tires. According to your rule of thumb, rcomps should net me roughly 3 seconds off my time, more than I expected. still leaves 2 seconds to make up though...

Well, the tires plus the added power you'd be looking at Id be willing to bet you could give him a run for the money.
