Best DOT legal slick?

Postby M20_fever » Sun Feb 03, 2013 11:48 pm

In my chase for some track records I'm making some setup changes on my car so i have the points to run some DOT slicks, just looking for suggestions on some good rubber. It has to be a "street tire", but something with a UTQG around 40 would be nice.

I was under the impression that if it was technically a "slick" it was no longer DOT capable.

They make r-comps with two little grooves in them and get them DOT approved, that technically makes them street tires so I can run them in my class. I need something with good cold performance too since one lap doesn't put much heat in the tires.

Interesting. Can you do a sticky on this type of tire tech? I'm ignorant of tire types, why, class rules, etc.

I can put something together describing the different types of tires and their pros/cons, but class rules will vary depending on club.

It might still make a good starting point for people to know about X, Y and Z tire and then ask their local clubs from there : )

Basically your looking at the exact tires they run in SCCA Stock classes. So you have the Hoosier A6, Kumho V710, and the Hankook Ventus Z214 (C71 soft compound which you would want). I run the Hankooks mainly because they are much, much cheaper. But it is pretty widely accepted that the Hoosiers are the tire to have.

Yeah but are the hoosiers $300 faster than the Hankooks? How do you like the Z214s?

Depends how much you want those records ;)

Love 'em! But that's hard to quantify. The only other slicks I have run on my car were old, hard, almost gone A6's, and they were 20mm narrower, so very hard to compare. Other than that I think I have over 45 autoX runs on mine and still plenty of rubber left, despite stock system not exactly wearing them down all that even, but that shouldn't be a problem for you. If I were you, I would search SCCA forums under solo and see what others have to say about the Hankooks, I couldn't really find much info on them and how they compare to the other 2. My sole reason for buying them was price, I simply could not afford the other 2.
