Matt's Autocross event's - 2013

Postby ten2doyle102 » Mon Apr 29, 2013 2:13 pm

I figure if Nick can do it... so can I!

Well, we had FVSCC's first event yesterday and it went quite well! :) We had a decent showing of about 55 cars and freaking beautiful weather. 70 and sunny all day... it was all any racer could hope for!

Anyway, I drove the S4 for the event and really gave it a good shake down to put the tires and suspension to the test. Overall, I am quite pleased with the performance. Carrying with what anyone would expect with a heavy AWD car like the S4, it plows under hard cornering. I need to figure out how to either drive the car better, or at something else to improve it. Maybe additional camber in the front and a bigger rear sway? Either way, the car still did very well in the spread.

Finish 10th out of 55 cars, 2nd in the STR/U/X classes with a 55.691. On my final run, I must have hit a cone cause they hit me with a penalty... Pretty bummed about that since it was a 55.036 which would have bumped me up 4 places and 1st out of all the ST cars. Oh well.

I don't have many photo's of my car yet. We'll see if anyone posts any.

And here's a video of the course.

this was probably the longest Auto-x course we have run at WIR. It was a ton of fun!

Nice course! My buddy in MC runs a stock B5S4 and he pushes real bad too, I totally spank him in the corners, but he can pull me hard in a straight line. I was surprised how slow it launches for AWD too.

Yeah, they aren't the best autox cars in the world, but I can deal with it. It's still fun! I can't launch and won't anyway since it my daily as well.. It's already got a bad 1-2 synchro as it is.

I think with the addition of some sways this will be much quicker thru the corners.

Either Datsun, yum! How far from Milwaukee is the venue you guys normally run? Oh, and my buddy has that same synchro problem on his S4, apparently its a common issue. Audi offers a upgraded synchro kit, but I think he said its around $2k.

No, no you can't!!! Haha jk, definitely like seeing more threads like this!

Fixed that for ya... ;) Haha seriously though, bigger rear sway should help. Any idea how much front camber you have?

And 10th out of 55 is awesome for a car not built for cone dodging, good job! And I am seriously loving both those Datsuns, that 510 is sex.

Yeah, that 510 was simply awesome. It sounds great, fast and cool. :)

Tony, WIR is by Appleton, so about 1.5hours from Milwaukee. We will be running at RA this year though. Only on the cart but still we will get to be there all day and watch other racing as well. And yes, the synchro problem is very common. There's a company called JHM that sells the synchro kit for about $1000 and it replaces all the synchros with a better composite material I believe. Maybe some day I'd think about doing that, but for right now, it still shifts. I probably lose about 0.50sec on the start cause I have to short shift it to get into second.

Nick, lol! Good correction. It's gotta be the configuration of the suspension or something because the Subies are setup the same with the engine complete in front of the front axles as well but they handle so much better. Looking at the pics of my car, I think this will be the next upgrade unless I find a used bumper near by....lol! Not sure on the camber in the front either. Last I remember was about -2 in the front just from being lowered.

First Shawano auto-x of the year!!! s4 content...

Postby ten2doyle102 » Mon Jun 10, 2013 4:41 am

So, yesterday was the first shawano autox for my club. Overall we had an awesome day and I baked my tires to nothing basically. The s4 did pretty well. I gotta figure out how to get the car to rotate more easily. It just wants to push and push and then when you think its done pushing....it pushes some more!!! I am thinking a bigger set of sway bars are in order for this car. Another new issue I am running into is overheating the fluids in the car. My oil temps were spiking to 260 degrees! And the coolant was on the rise too... I ended up having to take a short cruise to cool it down...Lol

Well, overall I ended up with 10th on pax, 1st out of all the st cars on raw. My pax index kills me....Lol. I ended IP with a 92.73 for my fast time.

Here's a little video to watch. If you listen carefully as I go through the first slalom, I think the camera just nicks the cone... Lol!

Very nice man! Someday, I am vowing to make it back over there with my car, that place is just too cool. Great job with 10th on PAX, very impressive. Lol did you not see my video from what happens when you mount a GoPro too low?? Haha your suction mount must work better than mine does.

Nice! What tires are you going to run this season? Do you happen to have a lead on some cheap stock Audi wheels?

If I was thinking about just making my s4 a autox car and wanted to eliminate weight, where would I be best to remove it? The car is a pig now weighing in at 3300ish lbs by itself and it plows terribly. I would think it needs to come off the front correct? I know people have successfully shaved nearly 400 lbs out of these things though, which if I could get it that light this thing would be awesome! I just don't want it to be even worse off as far as the under steer goes.

Do you think I'd be able to dial it mostly out with a bigger rear sway?

Tony or yoshi, can you merge this with my autox thread I already have?
