318is Ice Racer----- GO!!!

Postby ten2doyle102 » Sat Jan 11, 2014 2:27 am

SO I took my beater e30 out on the ice for the first Ice event we held and felt it did quite well. I took first in my class of only 3 cars... lol. Finished with a 116.5. I'll take it considering I haven't really done much of this stuff before.

Here's a quick video that we shot. This was not my fastest time but still fun! I get to do this all again tomorrow! :)

Looks like you're driving on a highway from the video.

It's seriously fun, and a completely different set of skills from what I am used to. Depending on the surface, racing line usually goes out the window, just go where there's grip (snow) I learned a lot last year.

Actually in this case nick, the grip is only where the studded cars have been. If you get off their path, its game over or you end up losing a ton of time. Its still a massive amount of fun and I think everyone should try it at least once. You really get to practice your winter driving skills.

Ahh, we didn't have anyone running studs when I ran, makes sense though. Totally agree, great practice and a ton of fun!

I need to get a Pic of the studded tires that we got. We are going to sharpen all the bolts too. Should be a blast.

The car out again yesterday... this time on studs! :) It was pretty entertaining, but the people putting this event one were not too happy with how often we got stuck.. lol! I only did one good one... my friend and co-driver however... found the snow banks on 5 different occasions...lol Anyway, we have some work to do on this car. We bought the studded tires used and cheap, only $200 for wheels and tires and just had fun. However, as usual, my competitive side wants to be faster to attempt to give the other rwd stud cars a run for the trophy. The car is VERY tail happy even on the studs, but this can be fixed by long studs, and simply more of them. The other issue we were running into was ruts... its very hard to keep the car in them... if you leave them... you find mister snow bank and end up like this....

LOL! But its all good. Here the results. My competition is a Yellow S2000 that is on some seriously well done studded tires. This thing is fast...

I hate that you're crashing that late model valence into snow banks :(

But I suppose this is one of the cooler ways to do it...

He brings it to the summer stuff too? Yeah, they are pretty nutty. lol!

It took a pretty big hit that event though. Eric Koehler went thru the finish at probably about 50 mph and lost control, hit a snow bank and sent the car airborne for probably 20-30ft feet I guess. I missed the fun since I was in the pits.... Pretty scary for Eric considering there's no roll bars in it and it nearly flipped in the air. Busted the front bumper, and crushed the radiator.

You have to be crazy or stupid to run a vert with no roll over protection.
