White 87 325is in NJ

Postby 87e30 » Fri Oct 29, 2010 10:23 pm

I'm reposting my car pics here. I think they fit better here than the intro thread. Am I wrong?

Picture time! I know the car looks a little rough, but I JUST got it... Haven't had time to fix anything yet.
I got a used hood badge from the jy, but decided not to put it on and ordered a blue and gray carbon fiber badge instead.Image
That is one sexy rear right there. lolImage
Little bit of rust below the trunk lid. Not nearly as bad as my 1980 320i that I bought 15 years ago though. The floor on that car literally fell out when I was doing 80 on the highway.Image
That's the worst rust spot on the whole car. Won't be a problem though when I eventually put the wide body on it.Image
These seats have definitely seen better days. I picked up a set of tan seats and matching door panels out of the same 88 325i that I pulled the motor from over the weekend. Oh, got a new door latch too, but that was from a different jy.Image
I'm thinking about just taking the back seat out altogether. There really isn't room to sit back there anyway. Especially since I'm 6'4" and drive with the seat as far back as possible.Image
Most of the missing glove box is in the trunk, but it's a little broken. Should I bother even putting in a glove box, or just leave it out?Image
I like these gauges so much better than the ones in my old 320. It's good to have a speedo that goes over 85!Image
And finally the engine that I'll be tearing down and rebuilding.Image

I want to run as big of a turbo on it as possible, so I know I'm gonna need to do some serious upgrades to the internals. I'll gladly hear any and all suggestions that you guys can offer me. Hope you enjoyed pics of the beginning of what will be a LOOOONG project for me. :D

I was going to wait until the engine was done before doing any cosmetic work, but I couldn't resist. My first mod. Excuse the crappy quality, I took the picture with my cell phone in bad light.

Just ordered my new camera so I can start taking some better pictures as I dive into my projects.

Goals for this weekend:
- Find out why drivers window doesn't work and fix it
- Install new hood badge
- Get new fan to replace the one my friend Sam broke on me when pulling the junkyard motor
- Replace drivers inner door handle
- Tighten up sloppy shifter
- Start pulling original motor out
- Win the lottery

As long as I get most of that done I'll be happy.

You should win the lotto first, then you can just pay someone else to do the rest of the list.

Ya know, I thought of that, but I actually want to do as much of the work as possible by myself. I'll pay someone to finish lifting my truck though. :P

Goals for this weekend:
- Find out why drivers window doesn't work and fix it *PARTIALLY DONE
- Install new hood badge *DONE
- Get new fan to replace the one my friend Sam broke on me when pulling the junkyard motor
- Replace drivers inner door handle
- Tighten up sloppy shifter
- Start pulling original motor out *STARTED
- Win the lottery

Installed new rear bumper lights (were missing when I got the car). Found drivers side connector is broken, so will pick one up tomorrow.

Found out why my drivers window doesn't work. Someone ripped out all the wires from the switch socket and tried taping all but the purple back in. The purple was just taped off and not connected to anything.

New hood badge installed. Looks AWESOME! Picture coming soon.

Going to Harry's tomorrow to get the fan, window switch socket, bumper light connector, misc other stuffs and things and stuff.

Bought 2 Win For Life tickets, but didn't win squat.

I would have gotten a lot more done today, but my boss asked me to pick up lunch, and I ended up getting stuck for 2 hours picking up parts for him before getting lunch. It's my day off!!!

I won the lottery!!! Eh, only 6 bucks, can't do much with that. lol

Hood badge installed

Closer view. I love carbon fiber.

I've had several people comment about how my rear bumper marker lights were missing, so I put some in. Also got some cool valve caps from Pelican Parts. :)
Image
This is what an $80 junkyard engine looks like. Can't wait to put it in so I can start ripping the other one down.

Go to Harry's in PA next week I think. Check their site at wegotused.com for their weekly specials. About once a month they do $80 for any engine in the entire yard. Today I went to all 3 of their locations. Allentown first, then Pennsburg, then back to Hazleton where I got the motor. Left my house like 6:30 this morning, and didn't get home until after 8pm.

I have absolutely THE sloppiest shifter EVER seen in a BMW. I read somewhere that one of the short shift kits on the market (I forget which brand), is just a stock e36 shifter. Is this true? I have that e36 at my job that we're parting out. I'm wondering if I could rip out the shifter and linkage and install it in mine without too much hassle. Any thoughts?

Just order new bushings from Pelican, don't put old ones from a junk car in there it's not going to be any better. Besides, you can use the shifter but I think the carriers are different in the e36, so the bushings are likely different too. The bushings are not expensive, and will make a huge difference. Be sure to get the bushing that goes where the carrier meets the trans, not just the bushing the actual shift rod sits in.
